will my turbo work or is it bad?
Just bougth a turbo that was rebuilt 5k miles ago..guy said it had very, very little shaft play. It has a lot of shaft play when compared to my stock turbo..i would say 1mm at least for side to side and it has some minor back and forth play..i looked under the comp housing and i would say the fins made contact with the comp housing..the fins do look likek they have been shaved. Is this shaving/trimming normal or what. Is this whathey meanby clipped? It spins great...I just dont want to have metal in my motor...I can take pics if needed

here ya go
in the second pic the blue shows that the wheel made contact..the black area (dirt and oil i guess) coresponds to the area on the wheel that is not grinded in any way......the red shows "SHADOWS" of the wheels fins on the comp housing..my guess is that they threw oil/dirt mix at high rpm
anyone agree?

i am trying..the seller is working with me and offered to have it repaired...we just need to work the details out since there are no shops here willing to do the work...I want to ship it to BNR for a repair/upgrade. I emailed the seller the same pics and am waiting for a reply...he said it worked fine for him and I believe him...I am sure that it boosted just fine but this turbo will not last much longer and I can't ruin a motor just because I really want to use it. My little voice won this time..my mechanic brought it to my attention but it was my decision not to use it even though I wanted to even after he told me what was wrong...anyway-I am hoping that BNR can repair it for a $100-200...we will see...

The turbo suffers terminal damage. The impeller is damage beyond repair b/c it is banging and touching the housing. It's banging the housing b/c its shaft bearings in the CHRA are burned up. I doubt anything on the turbo is salvagable. Repair costs will approach replacement cost. That fellow sold you a very bad turbo and there is no way he didn't know he was doing just that.

I agree with MarK, if the guy was running these on his car before selling then now you know the reason he pulled them off. The are junk man. They will need to be fully rebuilt and new compressor wheel. The only thing that MIGHT can be reused is the compressor housing and turbin housing but those are dirt cheap anyway.
The guy took you man, the best you can hope for is sending the turbo back to him with a refund. If the housings are in good shape you can use them as a core and have BNR upgrade them to stage 3's, but your talking about $2400 not a couple hundred. There is nothing you can do with these turbos thats going to be cheap.
What kind of turbo is this?
