Wide-band A/F meters... who's using one?

I am considering one for my Supra... and I'm leaning toward the FJO unit. I'm just wondering if anyone here uses a wide-band on their car... and opinions about the FJO and/or other brands.

For about $900 you get a true wide-band with instantaneous display of A/F... then plug it into a lap-top or PALM and do some datalogging.

I know Motec makes thier "pocket A/F meter" but it's about $1300...

Thanks for any input...

Jim

Using the M&W Uego, works extremely well and the response is surprisingly quick. A linear 0-5V output is convenient for datalogging.

Aren't the Uego's big $$$$s?

Do you have any links to it?
Does it have a real-time display?

Thanks,
Jim

Come on... I'm sure is more than just one person with a wide-band A/F in the cockpit. If not... you guys should get one... wouldn't it be nice to be able to watch your A/Fs while you drive (and are on boost)?!

Definetly a big reliability mod for the Single turbo guys..

I have the FJO unit in my car and I must say its the best $900 bucks I have spent on it. The datalogging is great and its also nice to have that constant a/f in you view at all times. It registers instantly when I take out fuel or add fuel like if I am at idle. The only thing I don't like is the big connector that goes from the ecu to the o2 sensor. I just ended up cutting the wires and then reconnecting them on the other side of the firewall. If not then you end up cutting a hole with like a 3/4 bit through your firewall. Other than that its great and the software is awesome. Playing back your runs with the graph is neat as hell. They have a new version that just came out that even helps even more. You won't regret it!

Thanks Steven! That's the kind of stuff I like to hear. I'm really surprised more RX-7 guys don't have one of these in their cars... I think it could keep alot of rotaries alive.

Where did you get yours from? Just curious...

I bought my Uego from MRM in Sweden:
http://www.mrm-racing.a.se/English/index1.htm

It's an M&W product but you save some $$$ buying thru MRM. The kit I have does not include a monitor so I use a laptop for tuning only. They do have display units for addl money.

I got mine here http://www.alamomotorsports.com/ Ya there are too many people out there that are relying on other peoples' maps or chips. Maybe thats why there tailpipes and bumpers are black.

Gordon,

The one I'm looking at is here...

http://www.fjoinc.com/automotive/WBO...ls.htm#wbo2rpm

It does display the A/F ratio (you can select their red or green display - or display it on your Palm device if you want) and can be hooked to a laptop for datalogging.

The full kit is around $900. If you want to monitor only (no datalogging) with your own Palm you can get into it for around $750.

The new car is fine... unfortunately I'm about 800 miles away from it roght now working. So it's sitting in the garage with a cover on it

Here's a pic of it.. more are here if you are interested http://briefcase.yahoo.com/jimswantko

Congrats on your victory... the saga is over... well almost.

I have got the FJO unit too. Works very well. The only thing that I didn't like was that the voltage output is not exactly linear from 10:1 to 20:1. I am logging into Datalogit (PFC) via 0-5V (I have the monitor display too). Its voltage output is more like 1-4V (still not linear).

I did a little bit of work in Excel and came up with an equation that works well where it needs to (about 10:1 to 15:1).

mmargos,

I just noticed that you're in Raleigh too. I'd like to get together sometime and check out your FJO.

I'm working out of town... but come home every few weeks... shoot me an e-mail so I know how to get in touch... if you wouldn't mind me checking out your set-up that is.

Thanks again for all the info...

I like the FJO as well, Jim.
It seems to be the best bang for the buck as far as a wideband kit.

I have the M&W wideband controller (heater/translation for voltage) and NTK wideband sensor. It cost me a little over $1k with shipping. Since I use a portable, I didn't get the display option for the wideband set-up.

The software is DOS and Windows compatible. I like the DOS version since you can graph out your A/F ratio or lamda over a 15 second interval (graph resets after 15 seconds).

The FJO has an RPM tach input which makes it better for graphing the A/F ratio and correlating it to your engine speed.

If you have time, you could make your own wideband sensor heater and translator for a few hundred dollars and buy the sensor seperately ($150 - $250).

saw the supra. not really a fanof anything but the quality and reliability and the engine (a lot actually). but, of its kind, a great looking car. good luck with it.

the peter thing has gone well and thanks, but by no means over. peter's nature won't allow that. but, its ultimately hopeless for him and a situation that he created and will simply have to live with. sad from his starting it with the swap. he had plenty of "outs", but chose to go for the gold.

Gordon,

Thanks (I guess ).... I know the Supra isn't your type of car... but I appreciate your compliments!

I think I will go with the FJO... it seems like the best all-around solution (with the best pricing I've found).

I'm sure Peters ego cost him more than it needed too... but that's for him to deal with. Sometimes you need to know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em (per Kenny Rogers).

I gotta tell you... your Sparco's really had me tempted! The grey Alcantara would have gone so well with my silver car.

Thanks J... There are a few "do-it-yourself" wideband kits out there... but I have hears some issues with the temp and current draw of the device.

The popular one is here
