Why do RX-7's put out less....

I was looking at single turbo set ups for 3rd gens and it seems the same set ups running on rx-7's put out a lot less hp then the same turbo kit on a supra? Is it becaus the supra engine has cylinders? whats the reason. I know the rx-7 is a lot lighter so how much does it really matter?

supra engine is considerably bigger, and the size diffrence is enough that it eclipses the advantages of a rotary setup.

Rotary engines make less power with the same amount of air and fuel because they lose more heat to the cooling system due to the combustion chamber shape (more surface for the volume than a piston engine).

Don't forget to take a/r ratios into effect. Same turbo with a different a/r will flow different amounts of air.

I think the main reason is the Supra engine is bigger- 3.0L vs 2.6L equivalent for the RX-7. Is the difference about 15%?

It's all about efficiency...
We can get into a whole technical discussion on the technical aspects, but maxcooper hit most of them already.
Just look at the gas mileage these cars get!

I'll give the Supras all the power they want, they do way around 1000lbs more than a 7!

Those Supras generally run quite a bit more boost than most 7's do.. I mean, I don't know how many Supras I have seen running 22-30 psi on huge turbos making insane power. HP is also calulated from the torque/rpm, and those inline 6 motors make torque like nobody's business.
