When does wastegate open?
Hey guys. I have a s5 t2 with a hybrid turbo. My stock wastegate is ported. I was wondering when exactly does the wasteate open? I know different spring pressure will make it open later. Is it a gradual opening, or does it slam open and slam shut?
I just got my manual boost controller and the boost kicks in a lot faster. Before it used to gradually little by little gain boost pressure and stop at a certain piont. Now it gets to a high boost level quick and then stabalizes.

Just spring pressure, no boost controller they open gradually. Thats why boost controllers are are so desireable not only becaue you can manipulate boost pressures, but because it will make the turbo more responsive by keeping the gate closed till its closer to the target pressure.

I was so scard I might have screwed up my engine. I installed a manual boost controller and wanted to test it out full throttle. I heard some loud knocking so I backed off the throttle. I was afraid I could have damaged the engine. I hope not. It's still running fine

Yes, it can change your tune if its a sloppy tune. If it was tuned on a dyno and held at a load for certain RPM cells, then it probly wouldn't effect the tune. But if it was street tuned in low gears (kinda hard to find room to make a 4th gear pull on the highway lol) then yes, it may effect the tune because the engine is now seeing loads at RPMS' it waen't tuned to see. If you heard knocking, better get that thing re-tuned quickly. Turn down the boost a bit till you do get it worked out. It may be a good tune also and you could be simply running out of fuel be it not enough injectors, shitty FPR, not enough pump. Best way to determine is with a wide band and data logger.
