Wastegates the good, the bad and the ugly?

I am shopping for a wastegate for my T04E project, I have come across APEXI, Sard,Greddy, HKS, and turbonetics..
The price is as follows in Canadian dollars
Apexi : 2000.00
Greddy 1900.00
Sard : 1750.00
HKS GT 800.00
deltagate 375.00
Racegate 570.00

So there is my options.. Now do I go cheap and buy the racegate or deltagate, or relatively cheap anyway, or do I sacrifice an entire paycheque and buy something else, any cons, pro's , stories I should know about, meltdowns, failures etc etc..
I need to buy one in the next couple of days, The tII project is sorta hung up waiting for the wastegate in order to finish the manifold design, I have to buy one, I really don't have a choice, it's just a question of which one to buy...Max

Ouch! Where did you get those prices from? The price I have seen for the A'PEXi is usually under US$1000 for instance.

People in the know seem to like TiAL, which is $475 or less depending on the model at Road Race Engineering http://www.roadraceengineering.com/tial.htm

I have the A'PEXi wastegate which seems good, but I seem to lose boost response when road racing (boost does not build until noticably higher on the tach), but I don't know if the wastegate is the cause or not. I've had trouble with my J&S falsing and retarding the ignition, which would make the exhaust even hotter, perhaps casuing the wastegate to stick open a bit. It has returned to normal the next day on both occasions. It could be something else, I just don't know. If I were to replace it, I think I would use a TiAL because smart people like them and it is less expensive.

Those prices are the reality of a living in Canada I am afraid, the parts get imported into Canada from the US which automatically adds 40% to the cost because our dollar is weaker, the distributor tacks on his bit of profit, then the store does, then we add shipping, and GST, and any brokerage fees, basically take the US price and double it, and thats the price we pay, altough its not like we get payed double the money here, but I digress..

I forgot about the tial wastegate, I have been unable to find anyone that carries it locally, it would be nice to have a tial wastegate and blowoff valve..The racegate is still looking pretty good to, I am just unsure of the quality of it, apparently it suppose to an all new design out now..Max

With the T04E the HKS Standard wastegate will be fine. Have you tried any of the Online stores? Don't get the deltagate crap.

Yeah I have been checking them out, I would like to buy it locally, everytime I buy something from some far off shop, and there is a problem, I end up getting screwed, and paying more out in return shipping charges and phone calls than what I saved...
Which reminds me, I still need to resolve my turbo's repair costs with Initial d fc, who has been pretty quiet lately...

So the standard HKS is ok? I see alot of recommendations for the 46mm wastegate in various posts, it seems to me though this may be to large for the application, an oversized valve is generally unresponsive and causes hunting reguardless of the application(wastegate, blowoff, expansion valves, floats etc etc) the stock tII wastegate port is about the size of a penny which can't be more than 20 mm wastegate, I am thinking that a large wastegate is a bandaid for poor wastegate plumbing, I see alot of manifold designs that make the gases take hard 90 deg turns with no radius turns, which is not very good for flow, the gases will always take the path of least resistance, is there a formula or extended capacities table available for wastegates?? all my years of big piston engine experience are not much use on this project...damn...Max

After reading lots and lots of webpages, mags and books, I think I am gonna get the tial gate, I also want to get the tial bov, I got a shitload of stainless pipe to start making my intercooler pipes. now I just need an intercooler..
Astro: Eric seems partial to the HKS, you may want to talk to him, I think most of pricing in Calgary is tight, everyone seems to be within 20 bucks of one another..I think no one in Cowtown though is a tial dealer, its gonna have to come from the states somewhere I guess...Max
