turbo spin at idle...?

In my FD I'm running a single turbo setup on my new street ported motor. What I noticed is that when the car is idle especially when the engine is cold the compressor wheel doesn't spin very much at all. I checked for oil leaking, no leaks, and hardly any shaft play, spins pretty freely when I spin it with my hand. When I rev the motor slightly it spins. Its a brand new turbo. Its not a very big turbo. .70 compressor and .96 hot side P-trim. Question is that normal? Thanks..

I'm using Castrol 20-50 non synthetic for break in on new motor temp right now is about 60-65 degrees F.

Hmmm, not overly thick or overly cold...

I'd keep an eye on boost once the engine is broken in.

what I noticed with my new setup (included a brand new turbo) is that the turbo did not really spin that fast untill I had driven the car for a few hours.

after that it seamed to spin up much faster than at first.

weather or not the oil is up to temp seamed to have an effect on the turbo spinning as well.

Im running a stock s5 TII motor and a 60trim/1.15 divided P-trim and now it spins fast at idle.

Its probably just the new seals and everything breaking in.

I hope its because the turbo is new. I've only put about 5 mls on the new motor and turbo. So we'll see. Thanks..

I had abrand new turbo on my motor and it spun so fast you couldn't actually see the individual fins !!! , lots of air would blow out of the discharge too ! , what rpm does your car idle at ??.

Actually the Turbo is now spinning pretty fast even at idle. I've put about 60 miles on the new motor and turbo. Maybe it just needed a break in. My car idles at about 800rpms. So far so good. Thanks.

If anything, I would say that the reason is because the motor doesn't have a stronge compression so it doesn't have alot of flow. The other is that the turbo is not broken in so the bearings aren't to loose yet.

Yea I figured it was because the turbo was new. I also figure the compression will get better on the motor futher along in the break in on the new motor. Tony
