Turbo question

I recantly picked up a Holset H1E. Both turbine and compressor wheels look great. There is little to no shaft play and little to no in and out play. The only problem is that when I turn the shaft it will only rotate about 3/4 of the way and stop. I put a little oil into the center cartridge and now it will turn all of the way but the last 1/4 turn is kind of difficult. Why is this? The bearings seem good in the sense of shaft play but is this caused by bad bearings?

either that or something got injested..... Really side to side play is not abnormal for a journal bearing turbo, but any "in and out" = thrust bearing slop anything over like .003" is too much and if you can feel it chances are its over .003" get yourself a dial guage with a clamp base, and measure the actual slop this will give you a better idea. regardles if the wheels have not crashed against the houseings, its fairly easy to overhaul a turbine. and most of the time you can get the kits for a couple of hundred.

good luck

Nothing was injested because I took the turbine and compressor housing off. I found out it sat without oil for a while I think thats why it was difficult to turn. I put a little bit more oil in and spun the turbo over a couple of times. The more oil I put in it and the more I spin it the turbo frees up more and more.

Thats what I did, I sprayed oil into the center cartridge. I sprayed oil into the inlet of the cartrirge then took an air gun an pushed any junk out of the cartridge. The turbo is spinning much better now and is getting better with the more oil I put in it. I am thinking it was just dried up.
