hi guys, just wonder how u guys rate the reliabilty of Garrett, vs Greddy vs Turbonetic turbo units, i see most ppl here compare Garrett GT35, GT40, T04 etc, but not much abt the others, are they poorer made or wat?

garretts are great, all those brands are good and most are based on garrett designs anywho.

to add to that: all those you have listed are very reputable brands... the stuff to be concerned about is all the "knock-off" items sold on ebay.

yeah like 350 dollars "garrett type" gt35r turbos that have a life spand of about a week

to make it simple, the cheapest you will get a reasonable quality turbo that will work for a rotary is about $900.00 USD and that would be a garret to4 series either "E" or "B" depending upon where you purchase it at.

Said turbos are good for about 325~375 ish at the rear tires on a good tune with all proper supporting mods. anything that is "new" and cheaper than that is very, very suspect.

Garret, Turbonetics, IHI, HKS, Greddy, Switzer, Air Reseach (old garret), ATP, aer all reputable names. they are all High Quality clones of the Garrett design, or use garrett parts to make their own version.

Now that I have helped, its time for me to be Honest, and honesty is often confused with cruelty........Use the Search Button, this was all available with 10 minutes of research.

Kenn pretty much summed it up except..... IHI is its own brand and company and has no Garrett parts, derivatives or anything. Completely separate, no interchangeable parts with anyone else. Quality? YES, how about being F1 turbo supplier. They have their own ball bearing CHRA's and have sweet abraidable compressor housings with 0 clearances (if you don't know what this is, look it up). APexi sells IHI (RX-6 turbo and many variants). GReedy turbo's are Mitsubishi. Again, Mitsu is its own brand and company and uses its own proprietary turbo chargers and parts and are not directly interchangeable (individual parts wise) with anyone else though they do stick to Garrett standard foot prints for some of their turbo's. Mitsu quality is OEM stuff, so its quality parts though they don't seem to last as long as Garret parts (15G, 16G {DSM guys}, T78, T88 etc.). KKK once again has no ties with anyone else and is a German brand, not much experience on these, but I know they are quality parts (SR Motorsports has a kit or two with KKK turbo's). Switzer, another free standing great turbo manufacture. Now... Garrett and Garrett clone derivatives.... Garrett (Allied Signal) of course is the leader standard for many upon MANY OEM's and many motorsports. They've been around the block a few times. Great stuff, good QC. And their ball bearing CHRA's are bullet proof! The new GT series turbo's have the highest effiencies among other manufactures overall. Garrett also supplies the widest range and has a great deal of interchange-ability amongst its parts so each turbo can be literally tailored for virtually any application. Turbonetics sells Garrett parts and Garrett clones and they do sell some proprietary parts of their own such as compressor and turbine housings (basic Garret clones with Turbonetics names on them) and many compressor and turbine wheels (many "SUPER" series compressors and the "R" trim turbine wheel) and also a Ball bearing center section. It uses ceramic bearings (as opposed to Garrett's steel bearings) and isn't a true full ball bearing unit, as it uses a single angular thrust type bearing on the compressor side and a standard sleeve/babbot bearing on the rear. HKS also uses Garrett turbo's (think T04S, T04R, T51, T51R etc etc). Innovative Turbo Systems (ITS) uses Garrett parts and Garrett cloned parts like Turbonetics but I believe a step higher. They have many proprietary wheels and their own GT series which are on par with Garrett. They have their own true full ball bearing CHRA's and are ceramic. Unfortunately I believe ITS has folded up and no longer exist, though I hear a rumor some of the engineers from the company are starting their own new founded company. AiResearch once upon a long time ago was some weirdo Garrett side company or something. I know they used Garrett parts, but I don't think the name "AiResearch" exist any longer (I might be wrong about if it’s still around or the name being used). And then there’s the slew of companies that use and sell Garrett parts and they don't produce anything other than a few simple housings with their names on them, like ATP, PHOENIX TURBO (aka: CHEAPTURBOS.COM), Majestic, Texas Turbo, etc etc etc. Master Power seems to be another Garrett cloner with some of their own proprietary stuff as well. I'm still on the fence with these guys as I’ve seen some good and a lot of bad with these things and they just seem to be a cloner company. I haven’t seen any real engineering data or proof or any R&D from them. They also took a hit because eBay used their name in many Chinese knock offs. BTW, stay the hell away from the knock-off. They are complete junk, though they are clones, the build materials and quality control are inferior. I've seen a LOT of those turbo's from ebay not even balanced!!

I'm sure I'm forgetting other companies, but basically if all the name brand companies are good, some better than others. Stay away from the knock off's.

wow, that's a lot of details, thx, and i am planning to get a garrett GT4088 or T04R or T04S ball bearing dual cooled. RacerXtreme7, since u know so much about turbos, can u tell me is it really better to get a ball bearing turbo, and oil + water system, also what's with those options of anti-surge housing, A/R .70, .84, 1.0, 1.15? devided or undevided? i know these maybe covered b4, and i tried searching and asking around but no one in my city seems to know much of RX7 + turbo, my engine is stock rebuilt no porting, i have apexi PFC, DP, MP, Exhaust, stock injectors and Supra fuel pump, planning to get HKS twinpower, my twin turbo has some problem so i can either buy a used twin to fix it cheap ~1200 or spend ~5G to go single turbo. i am not planning or any more than 320-350WHP but with great response, and i dunno if 99 spec twin could get me there safely, but if i am going single, i'd really like to pick a good manifold and turbo unit b4 anything further. can u give in more info here? thz.

I say go with a Borg Warner turbo, they're more reliable then the garret units and tend to last longer. A lot of people have switched to the BW setups, they also put out some sick numbers ;-)
