TII Turbo setup questions: HKS cast exhaust manifold?

Hey you guys,
I have all sorts of cash in hand, and I want to get ordering all my turbo parts and piecing everything together. I just would like some advice with some of the stuff I am buying.

I am shooting for 400 rwhp, and the car to reach full boost around 4000 rpms so that gives you an idea of the kind of stuff I would like to see from the car. I am going to be using a TII engine, TII tranny...

Anyways im wondering if the HKS cast turbo manifold with external wastegate mount is a good choice? Also what size of turbo should I run (should I run a HKS turbo? Is that all that mounts up to the HKS manifold?)? How large of a wastegate should I run?

I am thinking about going with mostly HKS parts, any suggestions about what to get and what to steer clear of?

Thanks!

Hello Dan,

HKS manifolds are very good! You will be wery happy with them.
to match your power- target you dont need to use HKS Turbos only, but if you want you can do this power from T04R or T04Z which is the BB- Version of the T04R. If you want to go Garrett-line, you have choice between GT35R, GT4088, T-Series like T60-1 or T62-1, T66 which is more T04R, or you can go with some Mitsu turbos like T78 which will be direct bolt on to HKS manifold as this one will come with T04 foot-print.
As for exhaust- turbo- size, you can use A/R 0.8x for stock port, or A/R 1.0 or similar (like A/R 0.96) for big street- port or even half- bridge.

HKS wastegates are known to be very good and the will do the job. It is up to you and your budget, which one to buy.

Hope this helps, but you can use the search function here for more info.

Dan,

Well I have done a little testing. I had a few people tell me that the HKS cast would not fit in the engine bay with such a large turbo. Well they were wrong. Everything fits and clears very well. I have close to 3/4" clearance to the inner strut tower wall.

Here are my turbo specs:

HKS Cast manifold
HKS 40mm WG
AF61 (61mm-> cold 1.0-> hot)

I want 400 streetable without running boat-loads of boost. In other words reliability is key for me. With this setup I have the ability to turn the boost up which was also important for those "show" dynos.

If I were to do it again I would go with a tial WG though. I have had the chance to hold a few of their components in my hands and they seem to be of excellent quality. Not to mention that the price is affordable. However with the HKS cast manifold you would have to get an apapter to fit it the WG to the manifold. That being said, for the money it is hard to beat. However if you have the abilities to make a manifold then you are probably better off financially.

I have been told that the WG is too small for the turbo setup. So I did some research. I appears as if some people have issues and other do not. I can't explain why this is because there was no valid explanation in any of the threads that I read. However jsut for safety sake I would upgrade initially as a "just in case".

One last thing check in the FS section. I see cast manifolds all the time. Just make sure that there are no cracks. This will save you a bundle of money and leave a little extra cash for other things(ie W/M injection).

Hope this helps,
Z

Anybody else notice how badly the HKS cast manifold for FC matches the exhaust ports on a 13b?

Nevertheless, people still seem to make good power with it. I have it on my car but will be switching it out.

if money is not an issue, then go with a tubular manifold. faster spool and a bit more power. do you have stock ports?

Yeah that's a known issue,HK$ cast the hole centers smaller,so you have to hog out both outer portions of the manifold ports to match the 13B.Along with the shitty wastegate exhaust design the only thing that it's got going for it is the robustnes of being cast iron.
