thinking of welding my own manifold

the title is what it says, but the reason for this is because i'm cheap and my brother going teach me how to weld, the welding machine he borrowd is a TIG i believe? (big black wire connected to the metal used to weld then you have a stick that has wires coming out of it and when you press the button on the stick the wires come out of melts on the metal)..

and i was wondering what types of metal that holds good and isn't all that expensive, 304 ss u bends are pretty expensive, i'm broke , i'm not trying to win an award in the greatest manifold look. i just want a manifold once i get my t04. and is there a website that sells just a flat piece of metal, so i can make flanges?

Racing beat sells a premade flange for pretty cheap... That is a good starting point. Depending on how cheap you are and what you're doing, you can pick up the OBX divided manifold for $200 or less (usually).

5mm wall thickness 50mm ID mild steel butt weld fittings they come in 45 and 90 elbows, you can also get 5mm wall thickness 50ID steam pipe which mates up with it nicely

if you want a heavy duty manifold, then that is the material to use

That's a MIG.

if that welder has lots of POWER, ie AMPS then it'd be sweet for 5mm wall thickness mild steel

If you have a good 110 volt welder it should work on the pipe HWO is talking about. My little millermatic 135 advertises it can weld 1/8th steel but I cranked up the amperage to max and burnt thorugh 1/8" wall pipe which is .125". The pipe he is talking about is almost .2" so I'm guessing it would work.

the welder we were using, not sure on its rating, but we had it turned up as high as it would go and we actually fried the earth lead when doing the main runners :P

HWO- sounds like it needs a larger - cable to me. Funny, I would think they would size the - cable the right size for the welder. Maybe it was loose on the ground clamp?

600HP CLUB- Sounds like you don't have that much experience with welding. Before you go welding the manifold together I'd recommend you practice on some scrap you will have laying around after you constructed the manifold. The only way you'll get good at it is practicing. MIG welding is pretty easy to pick up but practice makes perfect If I were you I'd get those flanges from racing beat and the pipe that HWO was talking about in mild steel. SS is harder to work with.
