Single Users - Any Regrets??

I'm guessing by now we have many FD owners that have converted to single turbo. I'm trying to talk my brother into it. I was wondering if there are any of you out there that regret the switch.

All the dyno charts I have seen show the stock twins have more power at the low end(till about 2.5krpms). When the single beat the twins depends on the single and tuning.

Ok so what you are saying when you start to tune your car (ie anything over 12psi) you realy need a Single for better cooling and Cfm produced.

Can you get the Singles to Spool up quicker by fitting a BB Turbo or Devided manifold? i know the Twins are small and are always going to be quicker but do you still have as good responce?

As you can proberly tell you are talking to someone that has'nt done the Single yet and is doing lots of reading about it, so your input is most appreciated.

A BB turbo does help with response, and I'm pretty sure I remember one of the turbo gurus (crispeed, etc) saying that a divided turbo also helps.

My only regret that I know will occur is in two years when I have to get my car smogged again and I'll need to remove the single and reinstall the twins & airpump.

(they launch pinging off the rev limiter and never see below 5000 or higher.) for oad racers, turbio lag is sort of like the old 10,000 rpm cosworth 4 bangers. you couldn't drive them below 2000 rpm or they'd just die. to get them off the line you had to rev like crazy. on the track you never went below 4000 rpm or so. for me, i drive at about 3000 rpm and am never far away from full boost. -gordon
Wise words.

I too when on the gas in my car am never below 5k, It's the classic case of having power where you need it.

Stay within youre redline (mine 8400) and make sure youre gearing is OK for the engine combination you are running (mine when changing never below 5K) and you cannot ask for more than that !

I cannot imagine life without my T04 !

They do have power below 5k as well, just when you get to this point it's a differnet world of performance

Only regret I have is not porting my motor when it I had it done!

I had a Mazda reman motor put in last year when didnt know too much about street porting. I didnt know I was going to get this crazy about the car. I wish I had it done now.

Motor is still under warranty til April 02. Doing to hit the dyno next week so hopefully It blows so i can get my street port!

Thanks GMONSEN and Rice thats exactly what i wanted to hear.

I like the 60mph, third gear and open the Throttle pick up of the twins. I under stand that they are completly diffrent in the way they produce there power.

At the end of the day if you want the power, better air flow/cooling around the Turbo and better boost control you buy a T04 kit. The stock twins are never going to be able to get the sort of Cfm the Rotary likes.

So i'm counting the days.

I worried about the response time before I went single, but I understand now why no one with a single seemed to think it was an issue. I think part of the overall improvement in the driving experience with the single is that you get rid of the transition at 4500. With the sequential system, that was kind of a limit for light driving because you'd have the dead spot and the change in sound right after. With the single, you can just rev to whatever you want without the annoying switch. The car also feels a lot smoother with the single -- effortless power. I have no regrets about the switch whatsoever, but it is taking a lot of time and money to get it sorted out to be a durable, reliable, road racing setup. I'll never go back (except maybe for a week or two every two years ).

No regrets here about the single turbo, just the management. At first I did and tec-2 and never could get the drivability sorted out. Now I'm haltec and it's great.
