Single turbo setup thread no. 1001

Hey all

I've been reading all over the internet and taking ideas from here and there to assemble a set up that will work for me. My car has a fresh rebuild (less than 3k miles, RA super seals, stock port) and a full emissions delete. I had mega problems with the stock twins so I went non-sequential as a temporary fix. But this winter I would really like to do a single set up so I can hit the ground running in the spring. I would like to be as close to 400whp as possible on pump gas and would like to do go a little overkill on reliability mods to kinda keep things "under their limits". The car is just a toy for me. It doesn't see the track or the strip or daily driving. I just want a fun, streetable single turbo FD that has enough power to get me into trouble on a Friday night.

Basically what I am looking at is:
GTX35 turbo
Tial 44mm wastegate
PFC
V-mount
water/meth injection
denso "supra tt" fuel pump
new fuel rails, an lines, fpr
some other odds and ends that arent really worth mentioning

My biggest questions are in regard to injectors and ignition.

What injectors are best to run here? one of my FCs makes 320whp with no issues running 720/550s but it seems like the most common setup on FDs is 1600/860s or something to that tune.

As far as ignition goes, is the stock system adequate or is an ignition amplifier in order? I would really like to have all my ducks in a row so I can get everything squared away so the only thing I have to pay someone to do is tune it.

Any and all input would be greatly appreciated

The 850/1600 setup is history, most people are now running the new Bosch EV14 injectors.
For a setup between 400-500 I would suggest you 550/2000cc injectors.

As far as ignition goes there are plenty of people running 500hp with just the HKS twin power.

Run 9's on all plugs as well. Twin Power and stock coils will do fine. Maybe pick up a new leading for insurance. Hit up Ray Crowe. New leading is around $150.

For fuel Mamba is right. But I hate the stock rails and 20 year old injectors. Get a fresh setup. Full Function Engineering rails and Bosch EV14 injectors. Injector Dynamics if you have deep pockets, or Fuel Injector Connection for half as deep pockets.

I would also consider building everything for 500whp. It's only a matter of time until you will want more.

You can get a set of new Bosch EV14 550cc for less than $100.00 and can either use the FFE rails or CJ Motorsports rails.

Both Black Mamba & XLR8 hit it on the head!

IMO I would run the BW S366 w/.91 over the GTX35, but thats just me.

cr7684 please explain yourself. Is the BW better for stock ports or going to spool quicker? The reason I picked the gtx is it seems like a good middle ground for me because I can't afford to do all this and build the motor (and the motor is still so fresh) but I figure single this winter and engine build next winter

You will be saving some money by going with BW turbo, you can even go with a S360 for quicker spooling than the S366.

My old setup with the S366 I dyno 487hp @18 psi pump fuel. And turbo only cost me 700.00 now they are around 650.00 new.

I agree with the EV14 injectors, A1000-6 FPR, get the CJ Aeromotive stand, make your own lines.

supra TT pump.

Turbo, I run a GT3574R, get something similar to that, precision 6266, TD61X.

You will need an ignition amp like the HKS box if using the stock coils. You would be much better off converting to a direct fire system using the mercury coils( no amp needed). You will want to switch to an ECU that can run direct fire( vs the OEM wasted spark configuration).

Adaptronic Select Mazda RX-7 ECU

Injector wise;stock primaries and ID2000s works well, or upgrade the primaries/rail to a top feed EV14 style setup as mentioned...

+1 on the Adaptronic. Excellent injector control and lots of flexibility with peripherals. I have been running one on my new setup and I love it.

If you need any ideas on how the fuel system goes together and what fittings, just PM me

Below are just a few of the "flashy" features with the Adaptronic ECU. Not to mention Volumetric Efficiency tuning, boost by gear, and traction control. Very flexible ECU, with excellent support. Andy (owner and lead engineer) is VERY dedicated to helping customers, and improving his product.

My setup is as follows and it should support over 500whp:

-Borg Warner S366 .91 a/r

-Full Function Engineering Primary and Secondary rails

-ID1000 primaries and ID2000 secondaries but EV14 1000cc and EV14 2200cc will do the job with absolutely no problem for half the price.

-AEM EMS v1 ECU

-Bosch 044 fuel pump in-tank

-Aeromotive FPR

-Nylon lines with -6AN fittings

-HKS Twin Power with stock coils

-Stock NGKs 9 all around

-Nascar plugs that people are starting to experiment with

I would not run stock 9's in a 500whp car. NGK Race plugs 10's.

A lot of people do it regularly. I bought a set of the Nascar plugs from the thread in the 3rd gen section that are supposed to be like 10.5s just to test them out.

I know they do. 10's are on the safer side with no ill effects. The Race plugs are also far superior to the standard NGK.

I haven't looked at the "Nascar" plugs. I will have to check out that thread.

They're Autolites that are supposedly close to 10.5 temp plugs for $4 a piece at Pep Boys. And yeah the race plugs are great but $30 a plug is harsh lol.

I can't imagine a $4 dollar Autolite having the build quality and consistency of a NGK race plug. $120 is worth the flawless spark for me. I have never had a hint of break-up at 24psi with 750cc of W/M, even when I had stock coils and a Twin Power.

Man you guys are great. So much good information and its all pretty consistent.

I am definitely going to look into the Borg warner turbo. The price is great compared to the gtx.

I'm going to have to talk to my tuner about ECUs before I buy anything. I know he works with PFCs but I want his 2 cents on the Adaptronic. I have been interested in them since I first heard of it but I need to learn more about it.

I think I did read a thread a while back about Trackforged manifolds. Has anyone tried them out since then? If not, what other sorts of manifolds do you run? The trackforged looks pretty nice for $625

I wouldn't try to run a 255 in a 400+ HP setup. I don't believe it would keep up with 2000cc injectors very well, especially at WOT.

Fuel pump I would either go with Bosch 044 or Aeromotive Stealth 340.
