Rebuilding a turbo?

I was looking into rebuilding a Holset HX40 if I were to buy one.

A shop I called in Sacramento quoted me $450 parts and labor assuming nothing was messed up. Just a bearing change, balancing, seals, etc..

They quoted me $120 (1 hour of work) to balance the compressor wheels if I were to rebuild the turbo myself (Rebuild kits are $80)

Is there anywhere someone would reccomend I go to? Does $450 sounds a bit on the high side doesn't it?

Does anyone recommend that I rebuild it myself and have it balanced by someone else?

Called 3 other turbo places within an hour drive of me...they all quoted $500+ and said they wouldn't balance the wheels if I decided to rebuild it myself

I looked around, but found no thread on how to rebuild a turbo either..anyone know how? Is it something I can do?

I have mine done at FI, got an S400 rebuilt by them for 250. They did my buddies Super HX40's for him....250 each as well....and that includes zero balancing.

I rebuilt my S4 turbo myself. I figured since I rebuilt my engine why couldn't I rebuild the turbo. Got the kit from G-Pop Shop for $90.00. Didn't need half the parts in the kit. Sent the wheels to Turbo City to be balanced, they turned it around in a day.
It's not that complicated. The prices some of these guys want are rediculus to me.
I have been hitting max boost for a week now and no problems.
I am in the process of rebuilding a BNR stage 2 right now.

I lost the auction anyways =/ For the price I'd rather spend a little extra and just get a reman HX40 with the non wastegated housing and a 1 year warranty

The thing I hear about rebuilding is that the Rebuild itself is a piece of cake. What you should be concerned about is balancing.
If that Turbine is not "just So'.Spinning at some ungodly RPM's faster than the speed of light,Then Something is Gonna let go,Fugg up,rub, take something out whatever.
I have been looking at Turbos, trying to Purchase one,and it baffles me that I can get a Used/needs a Rebuild turbo but it will cost more in the long run to get it Rebuilt/balanced.
So,I am going with NEW.I am leaving the Rebuilding to someone else.I would rather be safe than Sorry,.and Frankly I can't afford any more than What I have sunk into the car!

I've been told multiple times by people that balancing isn't necessary after rebuilding a turbo and race teams do it quite often between races. You should search the topic on different forums...theturboforum would probably be a good place to start.

turbo city can balance for $35. I balanced the stock s4 turbo and I sent the BNR wheels out to be balanced. I think that's where people run into trouble. I will balance the wheels every time.
