raising fuel pressure to check for leaks
raising fuel pressure to check for leaks
I have mine set at 38psi at the moment. Car is not running yet because i still have yet to get a hold of a good map for my E6K. Although the walbro pump can prime when i turn the key on. Im thinking of adjusting the screw on the SX FPR to say 50lbs to see if i have fuel leaks. Is this a good idea??..Is 50 lbs not enough or too much pressure.
Also will building fuel pressure by letting the pump prime the system for 2-3 sec be enough to check for leaks or the engine has to be running.
Now once i check for leaks i will make sure to put the pressure back to 38psi.
This is for my 87TII with E6K.

50 psi will be no problem. Your pressure would go that high at 12 psi of boost anyway. Most fuel injection line is rated to 100 psi or so, so you could go a little higher than 50 to check for leaks. I am not sure how useful it will be, though. I would think that inertial loads on the lines and other components from accelerating, braking, and turning as well as the changes you will get when things are heated up will offer rather different conditions than just sitting with a cool engine and pumping the pressure up. You will get some pressure spikes and stuff, too.
I do think a pressure test would help identify any major problems, but hopefully you will be using good hoses and fittings and stuff so you shouldn't have any trouble assuming everything is installed correctly. Just starting the engine up with the hood open (and a fire extinguisher handy in the unlikely event that there is a problem) would probably serve the same purpose and would require less effort. Doing it with the engine off does have the advantage of reducing the chance of fire if there is something worng, though, so perhaps it is worth it.

Thanx MAX. I had a hunch that you would come to the rescue!..Yes im nearing completion of my TII before firing it up. SO i thought its a good time to check for leaks. I did notice a small leak on one of the fittings that goes to the SX FPR and i was happy to spot it before any catastrophy happens. I forgot to put an o ring but after buying one from pepboys i was able to fix the problem. BUT fuel leak is not something we want do we??. SO im thinking of raising it more to see if i get more leaks. Can you tell me some common locatios where leaks could occur??..Top of the injectors where it connects to the rail?,...Do i need to worry about the bottom part of the injector?..(U can tell im paranoid)..
Ohhh and im running 1600cc secondary and cleaned and balanced RC 550cc primary. S/S lines too..Thanx

Injector o-rings at the rail end are one of the spots I would think the system would be most likely to leak based on reading such reports over the years. The o-rings at the bottom of the injectors would probably only leak under boost if there was a problem, so you'll have to watch for that after driving the car under boost.
I am glad you caught the missing o-ring at the regulator problem without too much drama!

I recently completed my fuel system upgrade as well and took the time to pressure test the whole system before trying to start the car. Good thing I did too because I caught some trouble spots early on. I actually hooked up all the fuel lines to the rails with the rails just sitting on top of the motor, not installed.. I did this to make sure they were not leaking from the injector o-rings near the bottom like you mentioned. After that checked out I installed that rails and retested. If you still have the UIM off it is worth doing, otherwise I know how much of a pain it is to pull the rails back out to do this.

After getting home from work i went straight to the car and set the FPR to 60psi. SO far so good!!.. no leaks..THis is a peace of mind and now i think im about ready to start the car for the first time in 3 years..Thanx guys!..

Cool!, have fun. Maybe some day I'll get to run my car after 1.5 years of being converted from a carb 12a to a turbo 13b
I thought of another thing you can do before you fire her up.
Sounds like you have put on all new lines or have probably touched all of them on your car at one point in time in the past 3 years. Maybe you should flush out any contamination before you send it through the injectors. I know I'm going to make sure I run a galon of gas or so though the lines before I hook it up for good. God knows how much contamination is in those lines from me cutting/flaring/bending them.

SETZEP- that sounds like a swell idea. I think i should do that. WOW you made one of the biggest step modifying that car. I hope everything works out for you. GOOD LUCK.
