Racing with a laggy turbo (street racing)

(regarding street racing with a big turbo)

Knowing im not the only one when you run against those big v8 & 4wd evos you have a majior problem. every race ive been in ive always had to play catchup in the race against another car of equal or more value.

so because of this you have some options to take care of.

Option 1. is to start in a lower gear (probably lower than the other opponent) so if your doing a 40mph pull you either can start in 1st and immediately shift within a second. going against certain cars you cant afford to start behind

Option 2. is to break boost. Probably the most common answer in the turbo world. spooling the turbo to help aid that major lag.

Option 3. raising the rpms. Since you know for sure that your turbo doesn't get full boost between 4-5k rpms and youll only have that 3000rpms to play with. raising the rpms to either 8500 or 9000rpms helps keeping the power for longer until you shift to your next gear

Option 4. Lowering the tire pressure a little to help getting traction. Cause as we know that big turbo will come on 10x harder than the twins or some small t04r. so while your turbo comes on and the car is spinning out of control that vette, evo will be pulling away. You know you have the faster car but you just cant put the power

Option 5. Drag radials are the 2nd popular to the brake boosting. Yes it aids in getting traction to the ground when the turbo comes alive but be sure to have a bigger tire wall instead of getting some low profile Mikey thompsons!

I think thats it for now. If anyone has any tips please comment! Just felt like talking about this situation since im in the same situation now!

If you must absolutely roll race

Then, leave on your terms.... leave at which gear/rpm benefits you.

Leave on 2.

if its so lagy then i say reduce the compressor side size a little or just change to a totally differnt turbo.

me iam just staying with small stuff like a BNR stage 3 with a goal of 300-350hp but that will be like maxing out the turbo probably.

OP you be running some tuff cars down south. all the street racing in orlando is weak ****. except some ballers come out to play. evos, sti's, turbo civics,3000gt vr4's but mostly slow hondas

/\ i understand maac what your saying with the bnr & the smaller turbos. but when you got every car at the meet with nothing slower than a 130-140 trap car doing 10's what am i supposed to do?

and i dont know how laggy it is yet. I havent driven a gt42 before so i wouldnt know what to expect. my T78 would spool full boost @ 3700rpms and hit boost @ 2900rpms. The GT42 is alot bigger so i would expect full to be around 5k

The reason you (us) play catch up is torque... lack off... I will roll race if I am coming home from work or such but when I am on race gas its track only.. "Real racing"......

Phantom whats your setup again? What sort of power do you plan to make?
Expect boost to come on HARD at 4500. Run some larger rubber in the rear and downshift so you're between 4-5000 rpm. An auto diff will also give you plenty of room between gears to pile on the mph. Unless an Evo has 600+ to the wheels and is dumping the clutch, I don't see them getting a jump. A vette....eh, they might pull for a second, but it wont last.

What speeds are you racing up to, the typical 40-100mph roll? Go faster.

man I was at NOPI Nationals in Atlanta back in 06 (before the economy really took a dive) with a bunch of the FD guys in the Speed for Sale group. I remember there was this one Supra owner who was just a walking stereotype. He had trailered in his Supra. He comes up to my friend who was driving a loud cammed LS1 Camaro with a cutout and asked him if he wanted to run from a 70 roll. We all just looked at each other like "wtf, did that just happen?"

bf goodrich drag radials 255 60 16 @ 14 psi, roll from 50 mph 2 second gear, car rev limit 9500 rpm, talk about lag; the hx60 doesn't come on until 5500-6200 so second gear is perfect

im running the hx52 and seriously considering going to an h1e, this thing is just to laggy for me. i made 400 whp and 1 bar and to me the car doesnt feel fast and its because it takes so long to spool up. its not all the turbos fault, hks cast mani and small sp on a series 4 motor dont help at all.

Brake boosting should take care of all your problems. If not, you're doing it wrong.

I heard "top fuel" was going to start racing from 250mph kicks.

I just dont understand why anyone would plan a race from a roll? Sure if you are out for a drive and find some action it happens but if its planned its a dig race.

I Agree. You should probably get a better sized turbo with more usable power range if this is the kind of racing your into...

1200 hp doesn't do **** when you can't put it to the pavement... or when its only on tap at 7000-9000 rpm.
