Questions about my r85 setup

I just finished up porting my engine for my personal fd today. I had originally intended on going with a gt42 setup but kinda came across a really low mileage r85 setup on a car I bought. The setup looks nice so I decided what the hell I will just go that route.

However, after seeing thread after thread with people doing mid 550 rwhp on the gt42 with around 20 psi or so I am starting to second guess my r85 setup.

I have low compression rotors, large street port, and everything else needed to do 500rwhp on pump gas. My guestion is will the r85 get me there or really close on 18-19lbs?? I havent seen any numbers posted in awhile from one of these kits and was just wondering if anyone had opinions on the r85 kit. I have been waiting a long time to build my fd and if it doesnt do 500+ I will be pretty disappointed. Am I wasting my time with this kit? Another member has a good deal on a gt42 right now and I dont want to pass it up if the r85 isnt gonna cut it.

This kit was really hyped when it came out but I havent seen any good numbers besides that posted by the creator of the kit. Even he admitted the kit he used was different than what was being sold to the public.

Im glad I am not the only one going this route. I know he sold a good number of these kits but you just dont see any numbers posted?

Greg, AKA: BLitzed33 on here did 561rwhp with his R85(before he had it modified to a 66mm comp. wheel) @ 27-28psi and c16. After he had it modded to a 66mm comp wheel, it did 610rwhp @ the same boost levels.

Just as a guesstimate, i.m.o., @ 20psi, 500rwhp would be cutting it close. It looks to be a solid turbo though.

if you look at the HT300 (R85) compressor map you will see it makes absolute max 64 pounds per minute of air.

64 times 14.471 = 926 CFM. it takes 1.92 CFM to make one rotary rear wheel hp so 926/1.92 = 482.

another way to factor it is 64 pounds per minute/1.3 for rotary rear wheel hp = 492.

the above are for MAX hp at 64 pounds of air and while they are generalizations empirically derived they work pretty well.

hmmm I'm also getting ready to install an r85 turbo (got a good deal on it) and I was under the impression that it could make more than 500rwhp. I've got a half-bridged motor though. I hadn't seen any compressor maps though, not that I knew how to calculate power from one anyways.

Thanks for the info. Also thanks to Blitz from the pm. Got all the info I was looking for.

What I have concluded is I wont get the 500rwhp on pump and about 18-19lbs like I wanted. I might get close but I guess we will see.

Thanks again everyone for the info.

You will like that thing, I figured you would have had it installed by now

JPR Imports said dee is now pushing a new version of the turbo. I will have a new version on my setup when it's done. It really didn't look to much bigger then my t04r but Jim said it has made some good numbers, so I will be going along with it. Find out in the next few months.

LOL well thing is... I was done building my rx7,but still looking for interior parts and figureing out how to run a vmount setup. Then my buddy found a perfect condition 94 rx7, so I decided to buy that one and I started pulling my other one back apart and putting everything on to the 94 (94's exterior and black interior is PERFECT, the 93 had a few dings and tan interior). My old engine had like 30k miles on a streetport, so I took the new one and pulled the motor and had it completely rebuilt with a bridge port. Right now I'm just waiting for the motor, and it'll be off and running! (well I still need a few things).
I really can't wait for it to be finished, I think it'll be a great turbo on a bridge port, too bad it won't be broken in before it starts snowing.
