question for the turbo experts

Well I have a turbo that I got off a guy here and installed it, lasted 3 days then poof!! smoke

well after tearing it apart I noticed that the "cone" behine the exhaust turbine was FULL of hard black crap that fell out like little rocks of black garbage.

Well the question is this-what is that "cone" and are there any seals that are supposed to be behind it?
This turbo is shot, junk, garbage-- but I just want to figure out what it is or was that destroyed this turbo. (they guy I got it from said it was rebuilt and had like 15K miles on it) go figure
hey maybe I should be a rebuilder for these turbos

thanks for any answers

The "cone" is a heat shield and the black stuff is carbon. The seals are all inside the bearing housing.

so is it bad not to see any seals? the bearings fall out and that is all thats in there, two brass bushings and 2 c clips but no seals?

so if a person were to forget to plug one of the waste gate actuator tees and it boosted to uhhh infinity (ya the fuel cut came in) for 2 days would it have run so lean that the exhaust temp got to high and I burned up the turbo?

I hope and prey that I didnt hurt the motor
