question for all you turbo DIYers

Lets say I have a turbo that has an exhaust outlet that looks like this

How do I connect that to an exhaust pipe?

From what I've read I need to buy a V band flange and have it welded on. ALl the V band flanges I found are in stainless. So I tried one out and it worked but then after the very first start up the weld cracked as suspected. The seal is still good but I know that crack is going to get worst. So do I need a cast iron flange or do I need another welder.

My friend welded and turned the amperage up pretty high. We also heated the two pieces with a torch before any welding

I asked these questions a while ago and didn't get a lot of good answers.. so I did a lot of asking around. What I eventually did was found a guy (friend of my brothers) to weld it.. he pre-heated the pieces in an oven, tig'ed it using rod made from almost all nickel, and let it cool very slowly by burying it in sand.

You don't want to just pre-heat with a torch because that's not going to heat evenly. You don't want to use stainless filler rod (for reasons I don't know) and you definitely want to let it cool off slowly.

I know enough to know that I don't know "why", that's just the "what" that I have found.

Correct, you needed and got the V-Band flange kit.

Correct, it needs to be pre-heated evenly and TIG weld it with 100% nickle rod. Its needs to cool slow (usually just letting it sit is fine) but the sand method is not a bad idea at all.

(I tried to attach a pic, but its too big)

OK, so you do weld a stainless end to the housing. That's weird
