peicing together a single turbo kit

Hello,

I am looking to peice together a single turbo setup. I have been talking with 94touring about his, and it sounds like the rout i want to go.

This will be my first single conversion, so any input, suggestions, and ideas are appreciated.

I plan on using a 62-1 turbo. I wanted to find something that will supply enough power but still provide a decent low end grunt and have a acceptable spool time. I am not worried about lag. Note that the turbo will be going on a stock ported motor. Mine has 9k on it now, so i think it would be useless to pull it for a port. I am going to build a ported motor this winter so i have a backup if and when the stock one blows. The 62-1 should be good on a ported or non ported motor.

so here is the list i have amassed for the single related items.

62-1 turbo ~ 795
HKS racing manifold (divided) ~ 850
HKS racing wastegate ~ 550
v-band flange ~ 75
clamps, oil lines, fittings gaskets ~ 200-250
HKS DP (can any others be used??)

Thats all i see for that part.

I will need a new I/C as well. My PFS one will not be enough at all. This brings up the SMIC/FMIC debate. My plans for the car are mostly drag racing, but as time goes on I would love to get some more road course type track time. Some people seem to have very large problems overheating with a FMIC, others don't seem to have such a problem. I would be OK with a large SMIC (m2 large type) but really want to have a FMIC for drag. (and they do look sweet) I would most likely go with a greddy 3 row, they seem to be pretty popular. I will also need to get an aftermarket rad, koyo or fluidyne.

Anywho an IC is going to cost around 1500, and another 350-400 for a rad.

I see the clutch being a factor as well. I don't think my ACT s/s clutch can take the abuse much longer, I have been doing vosko style 8k rpm launches on ET streets with braced diff and engine, which hurts the clutch badly. What type of clutch would you reccomend for around 450 rwhp? As far as clutches go, i am not very educated on the subject, so any input here is greatly appreciated.

Fuel system will be addressed by 550 primary, and 1600 secondarys, with an aftermarket FPR and SS lines. I am planning on buying Keith Gibbon's fuel system, It looks like that will work out great. Fuel pump will be a ND, or twin stockers.

EMS will be a Apex'i Power FC, with datalogit. I am also contemplating buying a wideband, but its on the end of my list. If i still have extra money i would love to have one.

I am working on some suspension to handle all the power, but that is another story.

Anywho, i just want to see what you guys reccomend for me, I am on a pretty tight budget. I will be running higher boost levels at the track on race gas. Any ideas of my power output at 20psi?

At this point, I am not sure this is even going to happen. I am going to have the money, But i want to make sure I will be doing it correctly the first time, no reason on doing it again.

thankyou,

bobby.

PS, sorry if it seems nooby, but i am about to 'invest' alot of money in the car, and having some alternate opinions will help. I also plan on doing the work myself. I am a pretty able mechanic, doesent seem like anything here would require something that would surpass my skill level. Mabye if i ask nicely, wargasm will *help* with the install if i reach any snags.

For the intercooler, I'd suggest the Apexi FMIC. It has a Delta fin core which allows the air to pass much easier to the radiator than the Greddy 3 row. This will help you if you ever road race. For drag racing, it won't matter, cause your not likely to overheat in 1/4 mile.

At 20psi on a stock port, your looking in the range of 430-460rwhp depending how your turbo flows.
For the fuel, twin stockers is a good choice. I wouldn't get the power fc for the ems though. You may want to look at something better for boost levels over 1 bar like the Tec 3 or Haltech.
Suspension is pretty easy for the power your going to make. Eibach pro kit springs, Koni/Tokico 5ways, and aftermarket trailing arms and toe links will be your best bet without killing your wallet.
Good luck,
Ernie

I already have the PFC, no sense in buying something else

I also already have koni's, i was thinking of getting a ground control setup, or in the future just getting real coilovers.

thanks for the input, i have been looking at the apex'i FMIC as well. I have pretty much decided on a FMIC. I will also rig up some ducting to get as much air as possible to the rad.

People are making ovre 400rwhp at 15psi on a ported motor with a 60-1, so it should be interesting to see what a 62-1 and some good tunning will put out at 15psi, and then 20psi or more on race gas.

I want to do about the same thing you are rfreeman27.
I have a Haltech e11 on the way. I'm already in possession of a T04B 1.15 AR on the turbine side and .60 AR on the compressor side. My question is will this turbo let me achieve 400 rwhp? I also wanted to know if I bought 2 1600 fuel injectors and moved my stock secondary 850 to the primary spots if I can tune this setup with the Haltech? You know, cut the duty cycle of the 850 down enough for the primaries? Also will my walboro 255 ltr/H fuel pump supply me enough fuel? Do I have to get a FPR? Can I keep the boost down around 12PSI and use the stock IC till I can afford a upgraded one? I really like the V mount but want to build it myself, I can't afford $2300 for one!! freeman, you should check out ebay for a FMIC you can pick one up from boostcoolers for about $400.00 he uses spearco cores.

Ernie, will the TEC 3 control the stock IAC motor? How about the stock knock sensor?

This, for the most part, is exactly what I've got.

900 primary's/1600 secondary's
FMIC - Greddy Supra core stuffed in the nose
62-1 p trim turbo
Electromotive TEC 3
Ported motor

An injector stuck and the motor popped about a month ago. The engine was rebuilt and went into the car a few days ago. Tuning will re-commence either this weekend or next week.

If you'd like to get an idea of the power output, shoot me an email in about 2 weeks. - Jrbjag@yahoo.com

From the first round of tuning, I saw that the turbo didn't come in until 4500 and it came in HARD (like 1 psi straight to 15). This might have something to do with manifold design, but I'm not sure.

Aside from the portjob being a thousand times better, the biggest difference with this motor is that we decided to use 8.5:1 rotors and a lighter flywheel. That will effect spool up some, but we'll have to see exactly how much.

I had a 60-1 turbo before this one... I'm not convinced that the 62-1 was a good "upgrade". After hearing of the lag/power of the new dual ball bearing turbos I'm thinking that is the best route for the kind of car you want to build.
Best,
John

Don't forget that you'll need to buy a BOV and a boost controller or PFC solenoid when you go to a single setup.

I've got a SBC ID II and plan on getting a Blitz DD BOV.

Can someone answer my questions:

thats not a big deal.

thanks for the replies guys. Im beginning to wonder if i shouldnt just go with a 60-1 and a nice pre made kit. I kinda want to do a 62-1 just to be different and gain the extra power (if there is a big difference, some people say yes, some say no)

I think ill give it another month before i start buying parts. Im going to amass everything i need and slap it all on at once to keep down the build time.

Keep em coming. Do i have to use a DP designed for the other HKS kits?

You can have a custom DP made. Don't forget you have to plumb the spent wastegate exhaust back into the DP also.

Yes it controls the air idle control. As for the stock knock sensor, its worth a damn, but yea.
