Open wastegate too loud but....

I have been told by several people that routing the wastegate back into the exhaust would strip a few horsepower. I know it would be just a few horses and much less noise, but I am reluctant to do anything that robs power. But the car is waaay too loud. I did a search and the only interesting thing I found was Radkins' Yamaha Warrior wastegate muffler. This gave me an idea and I called Burns Stainless for one of their smaller ultra-light race mufflers, but the tech guy was nice enough to advise me not to waste my money and just dump back into the exhaust at least 8" away from the turbo. What is the deal? How much hp do you lose? I plan on routing it back into the exhaust, but pretty far from the turbo. Thanks.

I believe it can also heat up the wastgate to much and cause wear/faliure.

Most of the kits were designed to with their wasegates to run this way.

A good way to see is to make 3 pulls on the dyno for like $60...route them back in....then make 3 more pulls. If you robbed too much power cut it off and run them open again.

If I were you I'd just plumb them back in around the middle of the dp.

I plan on making my own little exhaust system for my wastegate like you mentioned. I was just gonna get some pipe and a muffler or two and quiet it down some.

That would be an interesting to see how it works. Put a mini muffler on, I wonder if you loose power.

I don't believe it robs power. I also do n't believe it contributes to early WG death. I've been running mine closed-loop and open-air vented off and on for about 5 1/2 years now without any issues.

.....i personally prefer an open wastegate...shift under 4k and no noise ...thats just me though i am willing to face the consequnces of "noise pollution" lol ima take advantage of no emissions in florida . =)

It does rob power, how much is dependant on many factors the major being your exhaust system flow. If you cannot feel the difference then who cares what the actual number is? seriously, why nit pick numbers when your *** dyno cant feel the difference and your no longer setting off car alarms withen a mile radius?

i dont understand why people think its too loud, do you have a dump tube coming off the gate? mine is pretty quiet (all things considered) and all i have it a small peice of pipe running to behind the engine cradle.

i rode in my friends 2nd gen yesterday and he had his set up with no dump tube on the wastegate, his was loud as hell.

I have the T78 kit with a 3.5" dp and a 3" mp w. resonator and a 3" cb w. Magnaflow all mandrel bent. The wg dumps to the ground right behind the turbo, and the exhaust is loud as hell all the time, but scary during full throttle. As much as I love it I don't want to get pulled over...but I would never sacrifice any hp. With my street port would it even make a huge difference in noise level? Probably would....

Yeah mine is 10-13 psi. I think the more boost you run the quieter it gets, no?

My guess is it'll actually get louder with more boost - higher pressure in the exhaust manifold. It won't open as early however...

Yeah, I don't find that mine is loud from inside the car. I did leave a stain on the floor at the dyno last Saturday.

mark57 I noticed that you are NOT using the flange that sits on the bottom of the HKS wastegate to the manifold wastegate flange. Why?

you need that flange. It is the wastegate valve seat

Yeah theres a metal gasket that comes with the wastegate but there should of also been a metal flange that you install with the wastegate and gasket. Check out the link to see what I'm talking about. Its the flange thats located right about the allen head bolts.

No problem I forgot to install mine when I went single. I drove it for about 2 weeks before I realized it.
