oil thermostat???

I am installing a Setrab oil cooler in place of the two factory oil coolers and was wondering, because I've seen people mentioning that they installed an oil thermostat within the oil system. Would anyone know where it would be installed and what purpose would it have since the factory system does not have this within its system?

Thanks Diego

Yes, the stock system DOES have an oil themostat. It's inside the stock oil coolers (in my case, my car is an R1 with dual coolers). When the car is cool, it prohibits oil from passing through there. I know this because my car's oil would get pretty hot (via the oil temp gauge) just after start up, during the intitial warm-up. After a short time, all of a sudden the thermostat would open and my oil temp would drop 20 degrees in about 5 seconds. Cause was determined to be a sticking thermostat.

The purpose of the oil thermostat is obviously the same as your coolant themostat: to get it up to operating temp and keep it there.

Every factory system got the oil thermostat built into the oil cooler. On the Fd I believe it's in the driver's side cooler. The 2nd and 1st gen front oil coolers got them for sure. It's purpose is to bring the oil temperature up to operating range as quickly as possible by, bypassing the cooler when the oil is at low temperatures.

Thanks guys, I wasn't aware of that. Can you tell me where I can buy a thermostat for the oil and where would I install it?

Thanks Diego
