Oil Catch Can Install

Ok, here is the skinny.

- when I start the car it smokes (not 007 smoke screen though)

- when I start the car with the oil cap off it doesn't smoke as much

- after the car warms up it doesn't smoke as much, but you can still see it

- when I drive the car (foot on the throttle), the stock oil pressure gauge raises past the half way mark towards the top

- I was driving on the highway and when I started downshifting on the off ramp (let of the throttle), I smoked a lot.

- Motor and Turbo are recently rebuilt. No more that 3000 km on the engine and 150 km on the turbo

- lower nipple on the oil filler neck is vented to atmosphere and the upper is run to my charcole canister. Thats the way the shop ran it. Is there something wrong with that setup that would cause me to smoke?

I will be picking up a catch can tomorrow and I was just wondering where the best spot is to connect it to vaccum. I'm running a TD07 25G single in my FC3S and I would rather not connect it to the compressor side of the turbo. Is there anywhere I can tap into on the UIM? All of my emmissions have been removed if that makes a difference.

Thanks.

I have the same turbo and use a .081" oil restrictor at the turbo. Been doing this for over 8000 miles. Without it it would smoke. Also make sure you have at least a 5/8" drain line with a nice downward slope to the front cover. Post pic's of the turbo drain if you have any.

Thanks for the response.

I met with another member from the forum today and he told me that my oil feed was too big and that was probably the reason for the smoking. I'm going out of town on business tomorrow, but I'll post some pics of the lines when I get back so you can let me know what you think.

It doesn't matter what the line size is that goes to the turbo as long as it has a restrictor right before the turbo.

Well, I finally had time to work on the car today and went to get my new lines.

Originally it would appear that I was running a -6 oil feed with a -10 return and no restrictor. Could that be the reason for my smoking problem??

I got a 3' lenght of -4 AN braided line for my new feed line and a 3' length of -10 AN braided line for a proper return (shop used a silicon hose) as well as all of the fittings so I'll measure everything up and cut it to length. Only thing I'm waiting on are the new flanges for the oil return line from the turbo and to the block.

During this process I had to remove my turbo and I noticed that even though there was a lot of carbon in the downpipe and exhaust exducer of the turbo (and I mean a lot!) there were no signs of oil (everything was dry). Granted that I havn't run the car for about a week, but even so if the turbo is the reason I'm smoking shouldn't there be some indication of oil in the turbo??? Especially if I'm smoking at startup? Or is it possible that when I start the car the oil is pressurized and forced into the exhaust housing (causing smoke at startup) and the residual oil burns off in the hot downpipe after the car is shut off? My oil pressure is really high, although I don't have my aftermarket gauge in there yet, it is almost at the top on my stock gauge and I have all of the nipples on the oil filler neck vented to atmosphere and the oil filler cap off. Once the car is warmend up, the oil pressure sits at the moddle of the gauge, but as soon as I hit the gas it goes up and stays there until I let off. I don't remember it being like that before I did all of the work.

Any other ideas?

I'm Running a BNR turbo with the nipple vented to the atmosphere and the nipple on the center Iron capped and i have the same problem. In the 2nd gen fourm they have a thread on this exact problem.

The route im going to go is run a line to the UIM or LIM with a PCV valve in in to the center iron. then run a line with an oil catch can in it from the oil fill tube to the TID. if it works ill post here and let ya know how it works.

Wouldn't you want the put a catch can betwen the PCV and the nipple on the iron as well? I would think that there is a better chance of sludge sneaking through the lower nipple than the top one.
