Msd 6a

I have to get my car tuned on thursday and i need to put an ignition system in my fd before i go. I just purchased the msd off of a guy with an FC. My question was do i have to replace the coils as I install the msd or can i leave my stock coils in. I am taking my car to steve kan a he told me that the stock fd coils start going bad after one hundred thousand miles. With this in mind, changing out installing just the msd 6a would not benefit me? Just confused on what i should do.

There are quite a few people who have had the fd leading coil go out on them with aftermarket ingnition systems. I would get yourself a FC leading coil and run the MSD.

an MSD 6 box (as well as probably any other ignition amp) will DEVOUR your stock lead coil

go with an FC coil at the very least

Or use two after market coils on the same signal....and one amp or you can run 2 amps...your choice at that point. From what I gathered from the forum the leading coil is on a wasted spark system so you can just hook two coils right up to it and go. I plan to go this route in a little whiuel to see if it works. I run the T2 coil now, but its definitely starting to to **** itself real good. also. You'll have the piece of mind knwoing its new and cheaper then what i new coil is from anyone.

This has not been my experience. I've had a MSD 6A on my FD leading coil for 7 or 8 years now and love it. I have not had a single coil problem--and the coils are original with more than 160,000 miles on them. (I have an FC coil on the shelf--it will stay there because there is no point to fix something that isn't broke.)

My FD coil failed with an MSD 6A 3/4 of the way through my first auto x with it. Maybe a total of 2k miles after install. Total mileage on the coil was 65k.

Any indication on how it failed? Did it overheat the primary or did it suffer from HV breakdown or ?

agreed.

if used properly MSD 6A is great. I did eat two FD coils using improperly gapped (10.5) plugs and too high of a charge time. Kind of hit my foot with a hammer there...totally my fault, I'm too curious for my own good. Went back to stock with a 6A...back to terrorizing passengers.

Well during the run (1st gear the whole time) it died, restarted upon releasing clutch again died and was dead for good. There may have been an indication (rough idle) that it was going about a week earlier. Not sure what you would call that. It did not appear to have shown any signs of over heating. It did read 0 ohms on one of the FSM coil tests though, can't remember which one.

at what hp level is something like the 6a useful? also what vendors website can it be ordered off of.

ITS THE MOST POPULAR AMONG RX7 TUNERS. besides that and the HKS twin power.

However i went with the jacobs FC2000 and the power i have below has stopped because i have to get another jacobs. The ignition breaked up around the 478 pull! So i might go with the MSD 6

I just wanted to verify that this is going to work for me. a buddy told me I needed a digital ignition because I have individual coils, not a distributor?
