"map ports" on turbos?

How long has this been going on with these weird new ports on the GT-k series turbonetics turbos and the TO4Z hks turbo with the weird little ports on the inlet housing? Are they used to increase power in the up range of the power band?

Really? They call them "map ports" on turbonetics. Maybe the one on the TO4Z is a bit diffrenet form the turbonetics one? Because the TO4Z one has only a couple of the holes, while the turbonetics one is just lined with them?

well Garrett builds the turbos to withstand surge so a BOV is not necessary, if it's a gimmick and the turbo breaks well then i guess it is. not sure if i want to test the theory but that is what they claim.

well if that is the case then i would agree with a sales gimmick, those look like dead holes so what is the point? looks like one of those damn "tornado" wannabe sales pitches.

that is HKS's version of anti surge, the front piece is a machined plate that bolts on to the compressor housing to hide the "ugly" anti surge ports. plus it makes it 10 times as noisy so all the kids over here drool over the damn things.

I saw one of those used with a nor claim no return on yahoo fetch 250,000 yen for just the turbo. thats like 2k dollars for a used one.

IMHO its just a way of saying look we are different from garret, IE a gimmick.

Yep,

figured it was something like that.

I don't have even a fraction of the knowledge that Mike has (matter of fact most of my tuteledge has been from his posts and pm's) but I was prety sure it was just a gimmick for sales.

I wouldn't think that diesels would need a BOV since they aren't throttled.

I have yet to see a Diesel with a BOV. I'm not saying it wouldn't exist. Simply stating that I've never seen one.

On turbine engines like RollsRoyce/Allison C-30/40 it is called an inducer slot. The working portion is the slot just behind the leading edge of the compressor blade. Most people are seeing only the outside vent in the face of the bell mouth.
Allison theory is that at low flow the blade will pull in air through the slot and reduce compressor stall. At higher flow rates the air reverses itself and act almost normally (probably a slight loss).
