Lightbulb Let's Talk Intercoolers!!11

Hey everyone,

I posted this in here because this is my favourite section! You guys always reply fast, and have unmatched knowledge when it comes to turbo setups.

That being said, I'm redoing my v-mount setup completely.

Specs:
13bt fc
haltech e8 + ls1 coils
550/1600cc
feed hybrid
not really aiming for a power number, just a good stable engine with a usable powerband for the local roadcoarse!

Extreme heat exchange efficiency is what I need here, I wanna be able to do as many laps as possible without stressing the engine! (less heat, less wear, less stress! right?) I would go meth injection but the local race league bans any kind of auxillary injection

I need to purchase a good (read: bigger/heavier/higher flowrate) IC core. Endtanks will be custom.

What should I aim for?

More thickness? More width? More height?

Also, on what angle should I angle it if at all (I do have a custom vented hood)
-IC angle facing forward and up? ( \ )
-IC angle facing forward and down? ( / )
-leave it topmount? ( - )

I've heard bar and plate is the better design for flow, can anyone elaborate on the importance of this?

Anything else I should look for when purchasing a core?

Monday at the shop I'll measure how much space I have to play with and get back to you guys!

I'll also keep this thread updated! I hope I've provided enough info for all the guru's, if you have any questions - just ask!

thanks in advance!

You want a thick core with low pressure drop. For the FC I think there exists only FMIC options as having an IC on top of the motor is heatsink central.

There are very few tube and fin intercoolers made nowadays and most of what you will find is bar and plate, quality control is your top concern.

www.bellintercoolers.com is a good place to get a core in exactly the size you want it.

I would suggest something like this set up. You may want to consider better ducting.

The duct work on the yellow car is very nice, divided routes for Rad, Ic, and Intake .

the yellow car is not a v-mount that is the stock rad. but the ducting looks nice.

why not just get convert it to an air to water unit? slap on some end tanks, put a 2nd coil cooler on and use it for water, and have the re in the storage bins.

I am considering the air to water! It doesn't sound like a bad idea at all.

That picture doesn't work for me.

Dradon, I'm not looking/thinking about kits. This is all entirely custom. I already have a vmount intercooler, I'm just redoing it for MORE efficiency.

-thanks

Did I suggest anywhere anything kit related, you asked about angles and fitment. If you want Vmount on an FC I think you are going to have to do some major fabrication.

As I said before look for a pretty thick core with low pressure drop. Interestingly enough I was looking at the engine bay of the Ferrari F40 and the intercoolers look about 8 inches thick! Normally intercoolers are 3-4 inches thick (for our cars).

When measuring out your intercooler I would recommend you look for something that will fit in your engine bay that has a volume of 500 cu in. or greater.

when you mentioned "only fmic options" i figured you meant kitwise.

Alot of fcs are running vmounts. The fmic just isn't the best idea for roadracing. IMO that air needs to get to the rad first.

I'm gonna do some measuring monday at the shop like I said, and I'll get back to everyone with possible size options.

I'll also post pics of the old setup.

I am too young but I think it would be interesting to look back to the IMSA GTU years when the FC was running to see what they were running... if it was forced induction I wouldn't be surprised that the setup would have been front mount.

The FC Radiator is so much bigger than an FD radiator that you have more room even with an FMIC behind the intercooler for air to pass through the radiator.
