Which intercooler to get?
Hey guys. I have a question for you. I have an 85 rx-7 with a streetported S4 13BT, 60-1 turbo, microtech, hks manifold and wastegate, bosch fuel pump, etc you get the idea. Basically I want to replace my intercooler and have found a place that has good deals locally to me. Anywho, I'm going to list 2 different sizes (one med size, one large) and was hoping if some of the more knowledgeable guys can give me some advice for my current application. When its all tuned I'm aiming for about 370 rwhp give or take at around 12 psi. Possibly 400 but not more for sure.
Which intercooler dimensions etc would be more fitting to my goals.
medium size one:
Flows up to 700 CFM and more than 500 hp.
Core Length : 22" (550mm)
Core Height: 9" (230mm)
Core Thickness: 3" (75mm)
Inlet Size: 2" o/d (50mm)
Outlet Size: 2.5" o/d (65mm)
"End to End" Length: 30" (750mm)
or....
Large size one:
Flows up to 900 CFM and will support over 650 hp.
Core Length : 24" (600mm)
Core Height: 12" (300mm)
Core Thickness: 3" (75mm)
Inlet Size: 2.5" o/d (60mm)
Outlet Size: 2.5" o/d (60mm)
"End to End" Length: 31" (775mm
Thanks for any replies and comments. The current beat up one I have now has a 2.5 inch core I beleive and is 15 inches long (total length) and about 10 inches high. This supported 271 rwhp on the stock turbo about 2.5 years ago.

14" tall 15" wide and 3" thick. 2.5" in and 3" out. I'd show you a pic but the search function isn't working for me right now. I have a few pic's up on the forum somewhere.
Lets see some pic's of the "GTR" IC

i may end up with a liquid to air...
if i do this, i'll keep the stock top mount (on my 87) and have an aluminum "box" welded around it. i've got a honda goldwing (yes, the motorcycle) radiator with a fan that will fit up front perfectly....all i really would need is a pump and a box for a surge tank/ice box....
that may work just as well if not better than lots of the aftermarket intercoolers, but it will only cost between $150 and 250 to build...
something to think about

you're right about that.
but i was thinking they wouldn't hinder it enough to not justify the bang-for-the-buck you'd get out of it.
i've seen that setup make 425 to the wheels when properly tuned.
i'm only looking for about 300 now and maybe another 50 or so later on, so it may be the thing for me. but i guess if you're into the super-mega numbers, you'd be better off with a higher flowing cooler. it's all give n take and what you want for what you can afford i guess.

size is secondary to ther TYPE of IC you are using.. a bar & plate flows much higher then a rod &fin style, less loss across the body of the IC, so you effectively go with a smaller B&P style IC and maintain the same or higher flow rates, it's generally reccomended that if you plan to go to 400hp then a B&P style is better then a R&F style.. the one advantage of a R&F style is that it's cooling cababilities are better, ( this is also the reason for the greater pressure drop across the R&F IC as well.. )

hmmm... I see what u mean about the width and especially the in/out. I think with some thinking it could be made to work though.
What about this one ? Its a spearco core and is more or less the same but about 5 inches shorter....

That thing looks ugly. Look how the in/out's basically blow into a box then the air has to travel down the long tubes. I would think it would have good temperature drop but higher pressure drop.
