Exclamation HKS T04R Turbo Users: What weight oil is best and do you use an oil restrictor?

Long topic, but yeah, need to get some safety info before turning on the car and having it on a Dyno!!!

What brand Oil do you use and what weight(I assume non synthetic)

And since HKS T04R is an OIL Cooled only turbo do you use any type of restrictor pill, I dont see one, but I just want to be sure...

Thanks...

HKS adapter has allready restrictor, so no separate one is needed. If you have got your Turbo second hand without the lines, you should put restrictor in!

I use Castrol GTX3 oil for many miles now, with no problem till now.

For oil weight, I recommend 10w30 synthetic in the winter and 20w50 synthetic during the non-winter months. I'm currently using idemitsu (oil formulated specifically for the rotary) and very happy with it. I've also used Amsoil in the past with no problems.

As far as the restrictor, it depends on the oil pressure your turbo is seeing, and what the max pressure it. Have you measure oil pressure at the oil feed?

I didnt do a damn thing yet, im doing my research so that i dont f**k anything up...lol

And I thought we are not to use Synthetic oil in the rotary? It even says that in is the owners manual...

I was thinking of using Castrol GTX 20w50 myself, I have a thing of it in the house for the upcoming oil change...

PS
I got the pkg you sent thanks...

Cool, glad it made it there ok .

The synthetic in a rotary thing has been beated to death, but in a nutshell it's the best thing you can do for your FD. Less friction, less heat. In this case (just like the stock precat and stock AST) Mazda had their head up their collective asses.

Well since you know best than I will hold you to that...lol

Also does the weight of the oil like 10w30 and 20w50 matter when using a restrictor in a Oil Only cooled turbo, I know i read somewhere that a restrictor of 0.09 is what is recommended for my application and for ball bearing turbos its less like 0.035-0.07 or something like that...

I am running stock for now so the oil pressure was not messes with, -4line for oil feed...etc...

Maybe some of the guys with more experience will chime in with regard to the oil restrictor size. I know the Garrett BB turbos are supposed to see about 45 psi oil pressure, a journal bearing HKS turbo is obviously a different situation.

Re: the synth oil, I highly recommend running it. If you search you'll find plenty of positive experiences.

Agree with Rich, running a high quality low ash content synthetic is the best thing to run...I personally use Amsoil 20W50 series 2000 synthetic oil in my car

Ok, so now that the type of oil to use issue is solved, can we get someone with a Garrett or HKS T04R Oil Only Cooled Turbo to help out in what size restrictor they got with their turbo and or where i can get the part/info from???

Thanks...

The oil feed adapter has one build in (smaller hole than the line). Nothing changed to the presure lines, running stock oil press.

Oil is 15W40 Castrol.

stock pressure.. 20-50w....ur getting to technical just slap the turbo on w/out a restrictor and see what happens. the worst thing that could happen is that it smokes too much and if so disconnect the adapter from the fiting and put a restrictor....easy!

Cool

After taking the turbo apart I discovered that the alluminum plate on top that houses the -4AN flange for the oil supply line actually has a restrictor shaped into it from HKS, unlike other turbos that have the IN-Line oil restrictors. So that solves my problem of finding the correct restrictor size...lol
