Gt40r

I recently had a mishap with my HKS T04R. Apparently the 'bullet style' nut that secures the compressor wheel came loose and damaged the turbo. I am in the market for a new turbo. I originally wanted the GT35R but my mechanic suggested that i should go with the GT40R. My only concern is the spool time as i only have stock ports. The T04R had full boost (about 12psi) at around 4500rpm which i found a little laggy (It had a .96 housing). What do you guys reccomend.
Also I wanted to upgrade the secondary injectors to 1600cc's. I was just wondering if the stock fuel pump is up to the task.

The car is a year 2000 rx7. My current mods are as follows:
Full 3 inch exhaust
Microtech EMS
Greddy boost controller
Custom turbo manifold
Custom FMIC

I would be happy to make anywhere close to 400whp.
Thanks guys

I would at least go w/ bigger 2nd's. Go w/ the 35r for stock port.

go with a 35r with a medium sized a/r. if you are looking for any more power than that lookat a 500r from aspec, or t04r/z. gl

Sk8world i read some of your posts. You had the GT40R on stock ports at one time right? I gather from what you said that the GT40R had limited success in making 400whp on stock ports while a GT35R did it easily. Am i correct? I still cannot figure out why this is so. Have you come up with a reason yet? Could it just be other variables in your set up that held you back.
By the way, how did the car feel on the street and have your ever driven an RX with a GT35R to compare?

Thanks for the reply

i have rx7store gt35r, which is atp turbo and I get full boost around 3500rpm(12psi). At least with my car there is no lag at all. Maybe something to do with light weight clutch setup and carbon drive shaft but even at 2000rpm at fourth gear i get around 10psi. Car made 340rwhp @12psi and it has tons of mid range power. even with boost controller off which is around 11psi on spring rate car, first gear is useless and spins the tires all the way through second gear and chirp third. In second gear car spins the tires but still moves the car forward with just enough grip. I think it is great balence because you don't have to backpaddle throttle. There is also enough topend but this turbo definitly pull stronger in midrange.

I do want more topend and thinking about getting bigger exhaust housing but my concern is pump gas. I know car can make more power with bigger AR or turbo but I am not sure if I want to loose turbo response that gt35r makes. There is so much low to midrange that i can just break the tires loose and slide the car with ease and that makes very fun car to drive. I hope this help.

That's the kind of response i would love from the turbo. Wish I had researched earlier. My mech already went ahead and ordered the GT40R. I hope it makes up for the midrange torque with top end power though.

Ok, I need to make some changes to my last post. I took my car out tonight and car makes around 10psi at 3000rpm not 2000rpm. Anyway, still very good turbo response.

The GT40R will make plenty of midrange tq and high-end power. Here's my chart.

Oops . Oh well, it's still an awesome turbo and if he ever does port the motor, it has the potential for lots of power.

Thanks of the responses guys.

I would like to find out also, what boost should i run. I had my last T04R running at 12psi and that's on stock fuel system. I plan to upgrade to 1600cc secondaries and a skyline GTR fuel pump. Should this be sufficient to run about 15psi with this turbo?

I was looking through the site to try and find what might be a good single turbo upgrade for my 1994 FD and i was looking for any posts on a garrett gt35r because thats what i have been looking at. I was looking at ordering it from rx7store and the Realv8huntr said that you also ordered it from there. i was wondering if you like the turbo or had any problems. i was also wondering what other things i would have to upgrade when putting this turbo in like fuel system or clutch. what set up works for you. thanks.

When going single you will need supporting modifications such as fuel system, ignition upgrade, full exhaust, ECU upgrade and intercooler. Those are the basics for going single.
