GT3540R real ball bearing how to tell?

I got my BB Gt3540 off ebay from someone who hadn't installed it on their talon so it was brand new and it does say Garret in several spots including the casting. The exhaust fans are numbered with marker, no clue what that's about.
Anyway, it doesn't spin as freely as I would have thought from what I've heard which may not be true like you can blow into it and it will spin. So how do I verify if it is a GT with ball bearings and not a T series? It's huge too, which is a good thing, just thought 3540 was t3/t4 hybrid size guess not.

It should spin fairly easy. I can spin mine by hand or blow on it hard and it will spin.

i have a buddy with the same turbo basicly GT35r with 40r internals and his turbo dosent spin that easily either i dont kno much about that but i assume that since the wheel is bigger it probably wont spin as freely as GT35r. but dont take my word im probably wrong just throwing my 2cents in.

I remember Jason said he could blow on his M2 wheels and they would spin just like a toy pinwheel. My 500R will not spin easily. It will not spin by blowing on it. It also will imediately stop spinning after I flick the wheel a turn with my finger. I find it qestionable but it does have water and oil hookups.

once u get it running, you will know for sure

my GT35R keeps turning for about minute after stopping engine from idle
i doubt any plain bearing turbo would do that

there is a gt35/40 that is not ball bearing, that's why it doesn't have the "R" attached to the name. That may be what you got? did the seller say it was an "R"? if not then you might have gotten the other one.

I thought only the ball bearing (R) version has the water cooling in addition to the oil?

I dunno, it was supposed to be ball bearing. It spins by hand or if you blow but stops pretty much as soon as you stop blowing or fingering. It spins easily I think, just doesn't keep spinning. Is that how they are? I dunno. I'm already screwed since I didn't know everything about the turbo except I wanted either the Blitz KKK or GT3540R. It has a T3 flange and I can't find a manifold so I guess I'll have to get a custom one.

if you are able to spin it by blowing, its most likely OK, i havent been able to do so on any plain bearing turbo

as well posting CHRA part numbers which are on turbo will help to see what is it

^ CHRA part #? ...do you mean the serail #?

What about water cooling? I thought only the BB/R version had the additional water cooling.

Don't get a custom manifold, all you need is an adapter plate like this to mate your T3 turbo to a T4 manifold:

Thanks, where do you get that adapter? I'll see if it's got CHRA numbers on it and take some pics tomorrow. I hope I got the right one. Will having a T3 inlet instead of T4 make much of a difference if your not running astronomical boost pressure? I figure 15psi or less street, turn it up to I dunno for a drag run. Definitely not past 30 I think though not sure if even 25 is too high. The engine has aviation seals, FD oil system, S5 internals, and a large streetport. Everything else engine wise is done, cooling, fuel, management, still gotta get a FMIC though. Have an adjustable FPR just gotta figure out how to install it, also 860 primaries and 1200cc secondaries which is probably overkill, I left my hp chart at work, I know it figured to at least 600hp on a safe duty cycle.

Alright, I think it's a BB now, it spins easier when level like it would be in the car, if you hold it so your looking down at the intake it doesn't, makes since no, no oil or coolant but I didn't even realize I hadn't tried it level. I paid $900 for it new in the box but it came in a plain box. Looks like it has coolant and oil hookup too, theres 4 connections total.
Still any info on it would be cool. Here's what numbers I found, it has a plate held on only by glue and 1 rivit (is that normal) that says Garret, Allied Signal, IDM 008967, 700177-501A
On the compressor side: A/R .70 M24, Garret M55, 11251, 722 30
Exhaust M1 63, C2 805
The listing was minimal, new in box BB GT3540, .70 A/R, T3 flange, that was about it, like 4 sentances and he was selling it for his cousin (sent money order to cousin but he shipped it). Anyway I guess it is a real GT3540R but wonder if it's custom or normal. The exhaust fan has marker written numbers on it.

Nice car, did you buy brand new housings for it? Looked like I saw some in the pics. What did you do for a front mount that's all i have left to get to do the install. Did you use a manifold adapter or find a T3 manifold?
