Gt35/40 ???

Hey guys, I'm looking at purchasing an FD and converting it to a single turbo. I don't want a lot of lag, but I'd like some good power while staying on pump fuel.

I've been reading what I could on the GT35/40, but it seems as though nobody focuses much on that turbo, but jumps up to the laggier/larger turbo instead. Can you guys give me some insight into this turbo, what kind of power it will put out at 15psi.

I'm looking at purchasing a race ported engine from rx7store.net, and I've read that this will help with some of the turbo lag that is inherent in any turbo?

Anyhow, any input would be GREATLY appreciated, I've been trying to read as much as possible and I think this might be a good decision. It will be mainly street driven on the weekend/nights, I'd like to be clicking some good 1/4 times as well as being able to handle quite well. I'll be installing tein coilovers and such.

ANYHOW, let me know what you think.

GT35/40 gets boost ~3600rpm

Does ~480RWHP@20psi on a street ported 13B-REW

Very nice street turbo. If you want faster spool up check out the Apexi RX6 but it will be limited to ~400RWHP I beleive it spools ~3K

Try searching alot of discussion has happened on this turbo.

Depending on porting you will see 7psi@24-2500rpm 10psi@26-2700 and you should have around 15lbs@34-3500rpm on a the porting your talking about that should put you around 450 give or take a few at around 18-20psi. If you want a great street turbo setup this is really hard to beat, if you want more there are better options out there.
We can help I make and sell more 35R kits than most.

I have the 35/40. I have full boost (1 bar) by 3400. Don't know my exact hp because I haven't dyno'd but for street driving it's awesome.

Would I be able to get those high of hp figures and still run on pump gas?

If not, what would be the limit on pump gas?

I can't tell you guys how much I appreciate this, I've spent the last couple of weeks reading these forums before I decided to post, heh.

No you can not, you could run about 16-17 psi on pump gas but that would be pushing it a little. figure low 400's 4-430.

That turbo is non-ball bearing old school why not spend the $300 and get the newer ball bearing turbo with better flowing wheels and water cooled center section?

Show me a graph of a 35/40 that puts out the same horsepower at that #. Plus I would assume you would have to spend $1400-$1800 vs $500- $800 to replace that turbo and that turbo is water cooled.

it was time to have some fun. Dave turned up the boost to 15 psi, and put down 427.7 hp. It was almost right. Dave tweaked it a little more and on the next run we put down 430.8 hp and 332.2 lb/ft or torque. Boost spiked to about 17 psi initially and then held at 15-15.5 psi.

I can't see the graph and he spiked to 17, so if you really compare the two they seem to just about be the same. Old school is not bad.

I was thinking of possibly running 14-15 psi on a gt35/40 on my series 4 tII motor. In CA we only have 91 octaine sold at the local stations. Could I run this kind of boost on 91 octaine. The reason I ask is some people who say pump gas are referring to 92, 93, 94 octaine or maybe more ???

I would say you wouldn't want to go too much more than 14-15psi on 91.

Hmmm, maybe I should run a gt30? It will be for a turbo first gen. A reliable engine is more important to me than max hp. I'm sure I will have more than I know what to do with anyways. How much hp can you get with the gt30 on a streetported motor at what psI?

GT40R?

What about the GT40R? I'm trying to decide on a single as well.......

I like the idea of the newer designed twin BB Garretts for overall drivability, quick spool-up and the move practical power band.

I'm a little concerned about the reliability and longevity of a twin BB in a rotary application.

Who makes the best value GT40R kit (manifold, wastegate, etc)?

any thoughts?

Gravity, a mate of mine had a GT3540 for a number of years on his 13B. He claims that it was increadibly reliable and responsive. He said with 14psi he got 380hp from his rotor.

Personally I'm about to buy myself a GT3540 (Ball bearing), and after some analysis of the compressor map, you could get over 600hp from it. Also it seems that the GT3540 has a larger compressor to the TO4.

I don't see is at a medium sized turbo, but a well sized turbo for the street.
