Exhaust manifold glowing hot! Why?

I was seeing around 750-780 C pre turbo (greddy log manifold, EGT probe mounted in manifold just before the turbo flange) while running about 32-33 degrees of advance.

I cranked it up to 38-39 degrees and my EGTs dropped to about 680 C!! I remembered reading a post from rx72c, he was recommending around 40 degrees of advance.
