Unhappy Engine blown

Well my T78 is on its way to me and I was going to be putting it on in a week or 2 but now I have a blown apex seal. I have had my power fc in for about a month and I have never had a problem. I have always ran 12psi and my o2 voltage has never droped below about .93 so I have no idea what happened. All i know is I got on it in 5th once and it hesitated a little when the boost came up and ever sense the idle has had a miss in it. Checked the compresion and the fron rotor has about 110 psi all the way around. But the rear rotor was about 50 or 60 on 2 sides and about 80 on the other. The car still rund great and still feels as strong as always. But when the engine is rebuilt and put back I will be adding the T78. I am looking at some diff levels of rebuilds but dont have alot of money to spend. I am looking at the stage 1 rebuild from www.rotorsportsracing.com which is $2200 plus $350 for a street port. So I will have a ported engine with the T78 for about $2500. But i dont know if this engine is strong enough to withstand 400+rwhp at 15psi. The car will be street driven with track use ocasionally. Anyone who doesnt mind go to this website and check out the engine and tell me what you think. I wont really have the money for the next stage up so i hope it will due. But i would apreciate some input.

I hate hearing stories like this- it pops for no apparent reason? Not a comforting sign for PFC users.

You might want to call Adam at RX7 Specialties in Calgary, AB. (Canada). I had my engine rebuilt there with 3mm ceramic apex seals, 2 new housings and a street port for $3700 CAD (about $2500 US). This works out to somewhere between the stage 2 and 3 (?) provided by rotor sports racing. You'll have to pay to ship it but it'll be worth it. The number there is 403-246-6980

Thanks for the advice about Rx7 specialties. I will give them a call. Well when this engine goes back in it will be getting a J&S knock sensor. I am not going to say the power fc had anything to do with it cause it just does what you tell it to do and sometimes what we tell it is wrong. I honestly think I might have gotten a bad tank of gas cause ever sense it has been more prone to detonate and it all started the first time I relly got on it after I filled up. I just hope the JS will prevent things like this from happening anymore. Along with very conservative tuning around 11.5:1 air fuel. I will give up a little power to have it tuned way rich to be on the safeside.

Unhappy

Ugh, that sucks man. I've heard good things about Rotorsports so hopefully you'll land up with a nice engine. Out of curiosity, where did you get your Power FC from? I'm just wondering if it happened with the base maps or Ray's modified maps.

It was with rays modified maps but I had leaned it out fron where he had it. Because when i got it from him it was running so rich that it was cutting out under high loads. So I leaned it out some but it had never detonated at all before and always stayed way rich on the o2 voltage. And I called Rx7 specialties and they sound like they offer a good engine at a great price and am wanting to go with them but havent ever heard of them before so i dont know what kind of work they do. Who all has heard about them and the quality of there work? Thanks in advance.

Not trying to knock a good deal but this one sounds too good to be true. Lets do some basic math- 3 mm Ceramic apex seals and springs alone are $1800.00, 2 new rotor housings @ roughly $500.00 apiece plus all the engine gaskets, bearings, "O" rings, side and corner seals & springs, are another $1000- so if you got all this for $2500.00 they lost money ($1300.00)on the parts and performed the labor for free. Since Mazda is the only source for most rotary engine parts all shops have similar parts costs involved. Unless you purchase in significant quantity (which we do) its difficult to discount the OEM parts. FYI We always resurface the side housings, and replace ALL seals in even our most basic rebuilds.
If you indeed got the engine built to these specs for $2500.00, I'm impressed, but no business can stay around long by losing money.
Regards,
Bryan Smith

Jonathan...

Sorry to hear about your motor. Bryan at Rotorsports seems like a super guy. I wouldn't hesitate to have work done there.

Make sure you get that tuning down before the T-78 goes on.

Yeah I think I just had a bad tank of gas because my knock readings were up a little until i filled up with another tank and the motor messed up right aft I filled it up with the bad tank. But I will definitly be investing in a J&S knock sensor now.
