Dwell Table for IGN-1A Coils

I recently installed a set of these coils, and the car runs great -- until I get to around 6K RPM under WOT. The ignition starts breaking up. My car has a steet-ported 13B-RE engine, and I'm running about 11psi of boost. I'm currently running 3.0 ms dwell, fixed. I'm thinking I should set up a custom table with more dwell at higher RPMs. Suggestions?

I've run them at 4.5 mS fixed without issue. Very good performance actually. On a roughed it tune they had no problems lighting ratios in the 9:1 range at 12 psi. Set your axis up as dwell v load and add some more dwell under higher loads.

Thanks guys. I know more dwell will give me more total energy, but I was concerned about overheating the coils. I'll try 4.0 mS first and report later today.

At 4.5 they were cool to the touch.

you might want to look elsewhere. Are you sure the tune itself is good?

11psi is not alot and even with 3.0ms of dwell you should be able to fire that without issues..

I tried 4.0 msec and it cured the breakup -- thanks all. After driving for about 30min, I touched the coils, and they were fairly cool -- lukewarm at best.

And Enzo -- I'm not sure of anything, but I think the tune is good, especially at WOT. It ran great when I had the CD ignition. Now it runs like it used to, but a little smoother.

Why did you change from a CDI?
I prefer CDI's...

I changed from CDI because I was using a pair of MSD DIS-4 HO boxes that would overheat if I drove the car for more than 30 min. It's a weekend driver / road race car, so that wasn't working for me. I looked at getting another (better) CDI setup, but everything seemed to indicate I didn't really need CDI at my boost/power level.

The 'HO'boxes are not meant for continuous operation.

Yes -- I know. The reason I used them is that a MSD tech rep, who supposedly had a lot of rotary experience, told me they would be OK because it was the coils that overheated, not the box. He said I'd be OK if I used the right coils. . .

Needless to say, he was mistaken.
