Do I really need a Turbo timer?
Do I really need a Turbo timer?
What if I get my engine running cooler than factory settings by modifying my cooling fans do I need to turbo time my single turbo engine? becuase certain places I go I do not want to leave my loud car running for 2 min. I can put the cooling fans on timer, the temperature I'm running right now is about less than 160 deg f is that a good temp to shut down after driving?
The point of keeping the engine running using the turbo timer isn't to cool down the coolant, it's mostly to give the oil a chance to cool down the turbo bearings so that they aren't hot enough to 'coke' the oil and mess up the bearings.
I think you'll get several opinions on this. Mine is that, unless you're on a track driving hard for several minutes or more you really don't need one. Maybe if you're on a highway driving up a mountain or doing a long high-speed run when you'd have your foot down for a longish period and you wanted to pull off to get gas, I might let it idle for a minute. But normal driving around town and highway cruise, I don't think a timer does anything- the bearing don't get hot enough to harm the oil and cause damage. I'm sure you'll get other opinions that say that's wrong- I don't think anyone has any hard facts.
I do track events pretty often and I just let it idle for 5 min or so after I get off the track- in this case its to let coolant, engine and oil cool down.
