Divided, Undivided?

this is more of a general question than anything..... if you have a divided housing on the turbo, do you have to have a divided manifold as well? in theory wouldn't it split itself once it hits the housing anyways?

I don't know for sure, but it seems to me that the heat blasting the "divider" portion of the turbine housing would erode it or cause it to crack eventually.

you dont have to...but i would if you are going that route; port the inlet of the housing. Like the "bridge", port to a knife edge and curve it. Making the middle of it down further.
Kinda hard to explain, but i hope you get the idea. This is the info i got from a well known guy that builds turbo for years.

you mean smooth it down so its not just a "block" with sharper edges?

yes! smooth transition, this will not make it heat up as much and not crack as easily

Yeah, I recently cut the divider out of the header 'cause it was cracked. I saw the square edge of the turbine divider and decided to take the 'ol dremmel tool to it. After the grinding, it now has a nice steep bevel and rounded edge that will reduce turbulance locally. I wouldn't worry for a second about damage to the housing. If it does erode some, it won't be enough to worry about before the next time you have it off, and you can inspect it then.

see this is what i was thinking as well, good to see i was on the right track! apparently garrett only sells the gt40r with a divided housing, and precision sells it either way. but i can get it thru garrett cheaper :P

Make sure you use an "undivided" gasket!!! I can *almost* guarantee you a divided gasket will not seal!!!

I think the divided configuration helps the gases spool up the turbo faster, which is a bonus if it's cheaper, too!

it will crack eventually

I just bought a turbo that that had been done to, (cracked due to undivided mani)and the PO had not shown me a detailed enough photo, it was obvious where the old manifold gasket sat that the mani was undivided, and it put a crack all the way to the outer wall. I am currently sending it out to get the houseing welded as a result

any idea of the mileage on the turbo? and was the divider smoothed out or is it still there as it was "stock"?

Where did you find a turbo with a divided housing? What did it come off of?

It makes me wonder what Precision is packaging as a GT40r, when it only comes from Garrett divided?

I stand corrected! I don't doubt you. I'm going to look into this more, talk to Turbonetics and some pro shops. I'd like to know what to expect. Hmmmm.

use a divided manifold or you are negating the benefits of a divided housing. Keep the pulses divided helps spool up and prevents exhaust gas from being pulled into the intake of the opposite rotor.

Having a divided housing is a good thing, if I wer eyou I would rework the divider in your manifold.

Little info for ya: http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...o_tech102.html
