Compressor Surge ?

I just took the car out after installing the gt35r kit from rx7store. I also bought the Greddy RS bov at the same time. Now when I drive around and not really bagging on it (3-5psi) I get compressor surge. If I lay hard into it then it just blows off nicely. I already adjusted the spring to the softest setting on the bov. Is this normal? Am I going to kill my turbo? I hear alot of single cars in videos having this sound.

BTW the bov is right after the turbo on the intercooler piping.

Rob, I've got the same setup/symptom as well. I'm interested in any thoughts.

compressor surge at 3-5 psi isn't going to hurt anything. I know a guy who ran 17-18 psi with no BOV..that seems a little sketchy, but he's never had any issue with the turbo after a couple years. Anything under 10 psi isn't going to harm the turbo. Compressor surge sounds better than any BOV on the market any way, enjoy it.

Yeah, I have a similiar problem. I get comp surge on my Garret T04 at anything over vacuum, loosened my Blitz DD and helped a little for the 5psi but still getting it a little bit. The rattlesnake sound is okay, but sometimes when you're just grandma(ing) the car it gets a little...not annoying but just not smooth sounding.

Ah well.

Best place to put the bov is as close to the throttle as possible. I would try that first then see if the problem continues.

The factory setup has it right after the turbos just as I have. Moving it to the greddy elbow will be useless as 1. there is no room for one and 2. once the system is pressurized then it shouldn't matter where the pressure is let off from. And if I move it to there or close to it and the problem continues then what does one do after that?

The factory system has two turbo's as well, maybe you should put one back on? They are also recirculated. There is room right off the elbow if you want to weld it to that. I have for customers who did. Just means your changing plugs from underneath the car. If not I would put it in by the power steering pump. Putting it by the turbo is far from optimum, but what would I know. I have seen it work form either side, but it usually is more effective closer to the TB.

I'm not trying to say that you don't know your stuff. I was just trying to get your insite on this. There really isn't anyroom on my car to put it on the elbow (I tried before I welded it on the intercooler pipe). My bov should be big enough for this application correct? Will it damage my turbo?

My type RS BOV is located, after the FMIC, on the pipe directly in front of the power steering. and I get the surging letting off the throttle anywhere near zero vacuum/boost. I'm just worried about damaging the turbo.

This can happen and seems to happen more on front mounts. We have ran on on each side of the IC before no problem whatsoever. If you have the BOV adjusted correctly and you still have the issue and it has been moved to a more ideal location, two BOV's may be needed. It will put undue stress on the turbo yes. I would do whatever necessary to solve the problem. The other solution is to get a anitsurge ring machined into the cover. We have done that as well.

might just be dry... this happened to me on my other car. put some atf inside and slide the piston in and out. sometimes the new ones just get stuck till they wear in. hopefully this helps if not good luck!
