Clutch

Hey Guys I have a question about clutches. I have single plate clutch right now and it just went out after about a week worth of use on my Rx7. I have 505whp right now and looking to move up. Which way should I go. Twin plate or triple plate. Also who makes the best clutch really do not want to buy another one after this. Thanks

Clutches are actually based on torque and not HP. A hyper single exedy might be enough but most guys go twin as recomended by Exedy tech support. Exedy is popular because it remains a pull type, so there is no conversion. There is also what kind of driving will you do? A on/off puck type is good for drag. A twin plate helps make it streetable except for carbon but the new d-core is sorta in between and I would recomend that one. If you really want a tripple, try to contact Chuck at rotary extreme as he had one he wanted to get rid of for cheap. Ramy may be able to get it from him for you.

It would be helpful to know your setup.

I am very happy with my spec sprung 6 puck. Pretty good drivability, although I am unsure of the torque rating, it's not listed on their website.

are you running the cerametallic twin or carbon. i just fried my Exedy Hyper Single cerametallic and need to go twin.

the carbon and cerametallic hold approx the same torque according to Exedy. that is after the carbon is heated up by slipping it. i am not sure how much that would impact performance at the Silver State Classic ( 90 miles 30-40 minutes of 5th gear) or Road America (3 long straights per lap) or Brainerd, 6000 ft main straight.

i like my cerametallic as far as slip v lockup.

which do you have and how long have you had it and what do you do w it?

thanks,

howard coleman

it isn't an accident that Alcohol and Addicton start w the same letter.

you can have it all but you have to have a clutch.

Howard,
I have the cerametallic. I use mine on the street as well as for road racing, although I haven't had it out on the track too much yet. As of yet I have had absolutely no issues with it. It's got right around 3500 miles on it now. It's easy to modulate on the street as well.

^ did you have any issues as far as needing to adjust pedel length or clutch not disengaging? Mine only releases on the last inch towards the firewall. It's a pia to hold that last inch down with the pedal pressure.

I hope my Spec sprung 6 puck can handle 25 psi on the 500r once BDC installs my meth setup

No I didn't. Are you still using the stock clutch line or did you upgrade to a stainless line?

your pedal engagement problem should not have anything to do w installed height of the clutch. it may have more to do w the adjusted length of the clutch actuating rod. it sounds like it is adjusted too short.

find the rod on the backside of the brake pedal running towards the firewall. note an adjustment locker nut near the pedal. lengthen the rod 'til you have just a tad of freeplay.

good luck,

Welcome to the high horsepower FD world. Once you get this problem licked, you have the transmission to look forward to!

You mention clutch disk but not pressure plate or flywheel. While the disk is the deisgned "wear" item of this system, the pressure plate can make the difference on when the disk starts to slip. Once the disk starts glazing the opposing surfaces, it's friction coefficient is going make it easier to continue slipping rather than "grabbing."

What pressure plate are you running?

ACT makes a couple of high sprung pressure plates. With my "X" high pressure plate I have toasted a "Pineapple Ceramic" spring six puck after about 8K miles. Chances are a "solid" disk is not going to hold your torque. You are going to need to go to at least a mult-puck arrangement. A more extreme would be a multi-clutch disk setup.

I have used Clutchnet.com for custom sprung six pucks in two cars so far. But without a higher sprung pressure plate your results are going to be limited.

Tony

It's Rated at 518 Ft Lb's of torque. Thanks Rich! This is what I ended up Purchacing for my car.

The Stage 3+ (Unsprung) is rated at 598 Lb's though.
