cheap turbo
I just picked up a first gen RX-7 and I would like to look into putting a cheap turbo in the car...I've been looking around and it seems like some of the turbos ripped out of cars like old supras, porsches, etc might be a good place to start, but I was wondering if any here have any experience with some of these turbos...as in which ones might be close to the right size for mid to high end power...
I'm not really looking for a ton of power and I'm not really THAT concerned about the motor...I'm thinking the 12A it has right now is just a temporary thing, so if I kill it no biggie...
I was thinking that the toyota turbo off the supra might be nice as it has an intigrated waste gate, not ideal for preformance I'm sure but simple is good right now...
Thanks...

if you want something cheap than can run a nice amount of boost, go for the 14b rip it right out of the 1st gen talon/laser. I ran about 20psi (max boost 24/7) but you can run anyother lower-psi safely with a man.boost cont. just some ideas throwing out here :P

don't forget that you can just buy an 89-91 rx7 turbo and manifold and just bolt it on. You would most likely have to tap water lines and be creative with the oil lines. Its not too terribly uncommon to get 250 rwhp out of one of those. anything with much more power than that, you may need to swap trannies (depending on what model 1st gen you have).
The MR2 turbo would be better, but it might be tough to get a manifold for it to work, i dunno.

the CT26 MR2 turbo's are twin entry, you'd just need to jiggle up a manifold or an adapter to the stock manifold
TuRbOfAsT87II - know of anyone running that boost on a 13B with one of those turbos? bet they have a small as exhuast side on them, they are ment for boingers.
the MR2 turbo is one of the largest exhuast housings on factory boinger turbo's.

Someone here (forgot his name) had an FD that a PO converted to single with a Grand National turbo.... said it had full boost by 3500... not bad not bad... pick up those turbos for $200 or so. Remember our engines have large appetites for air and need lots of breathing room on the exhaust side... so a turbo sized for a 3.8l boinger worked well on a 13B.
For a 12A I'd look for a T-series turbo off of an early Ford 2.3... anything '87-88 will be an IHI so get '86 down, preferably out of a 5-speed because they had larger exhaust A/R's... I think automatics were .48, some 5-speeds were .63, and a FEW cars (SVO Mustangs?) had something like .83, so those are the ones to hunt down, unless you don't mind buying a new housing. You might have to, as SVO's are extremely rare and I doubt any would be in junkyards, that's be like finding a Hemi 'Cuda in the local Pick-n-Pull. There was an article in one of the Mustang rags a couple years ago, about hopping up those 2.3 Turbos... talk about your beefy bottom ends, 30+psi and 400+bhp at under 4k before the intercooler blows off, from an untouched junkyard block, wow...
