Exclamation Blew my T4, what can I do?

Well last night I replace the manifold to turbo gasket because it was leaking. Im not sure how it happened, but I took the car out to test it and it built boost fine for about five minutes. Then at the top of third gear the turbo locked up (no boost) I thought I just blew a charge pipe, but when I took the filter off the turbo the wheel wouldnt spin. I think some idiot dropped something in my air filter when they were ******* around with it...not sure what happened though, but the compressor fins were messed up and oil was leaking out of the compressor bad. Anyways

It was origionally a to4b .6 cold 1.15hot w/ an o trim wheel i believe. I need to replace at minimum the compressor wheel, shaft and center section, but the exhaust wheel and shaft are one piece right? Well Im in college so im going for a cheap solution here. Plus Ive wanted a larger compressor anyways.

So my question is will this cheap ebay turbo work (its the infamous "T70") http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...e=STRK:MEWA:IT
I think that looks like a T3 !!!! exhaust housing...maybe not, but could I use that turbo except use my exhaust housing? This is assuming my exhaust housing isnt damaged, but the compressor housing isnt, so I wouldnt imagine it would be, but I will check.

I would basically be making a T61/T04b hybrid, the only concern I can see is that maybe the exhaust wheel from the T60 wont fit in my T4 exhaust housing well. What do you guys think is my best option here?

Are you sure you didn't throw a seal. That could go right through your turbo make a mess as you've described.

If he blew the intake side, it couldn't be a seal.

the motor runs cherry though, but yea a seal was the first thing i thought of. It starts, idles and runs good. I just need some advice on whether or not that turbo will work. Thanks though.
-Ill look in my intercooler end tank and find whatever it was that fucked **** up.

I know this is an old threat but the same thing just happened to me. Something might have gotten into my air filter and it got into my brand new (5 days old) T4 turbo and destroyed the fins. However, what I am really worried about is if the fin's particles could have damaged my engine. I checked and cleaned my IC (V mount) and I found many of the fins broken particles at the bottom of it. I guess my questions would be:

-do you think any particles could make it to the engine or they should stay in the IC? If so, what could happened, damaged the seals?

-What steps should I take besides cleaning the IC?

-The car iddles good at 700rpm, and it also iddles good at 1,000 rpm with the fans on. What are signs of a bad apex seal?

-The car has a very subtle zooming sound when I reach 30 mph approx but I think it might be the damage compressor making the sound, however what do you guys think?

-Any ideas where I could send the turbo in the US to get it repaired?

I know you guys must be all busy but I truly appreciate any feedback on this. This was my own christmas gift and you could imagine how upset I am.

Thanks!

can't know for sure...but I bet a lot would get stuck in the IC. probably wouldn't break apex seals, but scar the housings...which will lose compression

radiator shop probably can clean it pretty good.

lumpy idle, hard starts

hard to say

BNR or maybe A-Spec can repair it???

I feel for you...best of luck!

Hey thanks for the reply. I already got the IC cleaned out and proceeded to start the engine just to see if anything is wrong with it. The iddle is good and it started perfect. If any of the housings got scared resulting in some lost of compression, do you think the car would start and iddle in a normal way?

Thank you for the info. I just reordered a new turbo but I will be looking into sending the damaged for a rebuilt, that way I could maybe sell it locally and recopu some of the loss.

Well I wanted to give everyone an update on my chipped turbo fins nightmare. My new turbo arrived and I already installed it. I cleaned the IC and checked compression, and thank god everything is ok. These past 30 days have been pretty intense hoping that my engine was not affected. Good thing I was one of the lucky ones after all. On the other hand, I ordered a new set of header gaskets which I needed to replace anyways, so I guess I took advantage of the situation. Here are some pictures of my destroyed turbo and the new one. Thank you all for your good feeback back then when the nightmare began.

Juan,

Your new turbo looks to be very nice, What MP did you get .

Also your old turbo seems to be one of the ebay style ones ( chinese ) . I have seen those shafts start to wobble after few hundred kms then the compressor wheel hit the compressor housing and send shards everywhere.

But the MP definitly better.

I'm not quite sure yet. I always use a HKS filter but at that time I was using a temporary used K&N while my new 4" HKS filter arrived. The filter did look like it was missing part of the base, but I'm not certain if it was that or simply it was the chinese turbo.

Yeah, I just tested my car with this new turbo and it seems to perform better too. I'm not sure if it was because the chinese turbo was not performing at its best before it got destroyed, but I like the MP much better. To be honest, I wasn't familiar with the MPs before until now. I'm not sure if there is a model # for it but mine is a T70-T4 (excuse me if I'm wrong).

I'm just glad this didn't turn out to be a major nightmare where apex seals could've been affected, etc. Not a good experience at all.
