Yeah, the name Corky Bell sounds like a cartoon character but he is a highly regarded authority on turbocharging.

He is the author of "Maximum Boost - Designing, Testing and Installing Turbocharger Systems". This book is considered the "Bible" for people who are interested in turbocharging. It is an excellent book for those who want to learn about turbos.

Corky says that HE doesn't think surge can be damaging (to the turbo). There are other 'experts' who disagree. He hasn't seen one on a real race car, and they are much harder on their turbos than a street car. I haven't measured how much pressure forms before the throttle w/o a bov while shifting- if it is a lot, then using a bov would lower the stress on the piping, joints, etc like Max said.

I'm not sure if anyone's tested to see if they really help with speeding up the spool-up of the turbo after a shift, and I haven't seen Corky express his view on this either.

Bar and Kilos are not the same.

In Japan, we use Kilograms per square centimeter.

1.0 Bar is actually 1.02 Kg/cm2 or 1.02 Kilos as we would say here.

As far as this 'no blow off valve' argument... I hate driving a car with no blow off... it's too sluggish in between shifts. You are definitely damaging your turbo if you run without one... that really cool giggle noise only lasts for just so long, then its BYE BYE turbo.

...hmmm...I thought they were the same. I guess they're close enough for me. Kind of like comparing PS and HP.

Great comparison between turbos and jet turbines there. Last time I checked, jet engines didn't have throttle plates that got slammed shut, blocking the airflow hundreds of times in a day, or have to be respooled over and over and over and over and over from nearly a standstill in the course of a trip...

Ya, well we dont hit many air pockets down here on the ground either... The engine is not the only turbine on a JET motor... There are also other ones on the ground, that start some of the bigger/older type aircraft, and the newer ones work just like a car, only battery power makes the Turbine start its power-up..

I really dont want to get more indepth then that..... If it wasn't classfied, I would send you the book and you could read up on it..
