Question A'pexi IHI RX6 Turbo

I've heard a lot about the T-78 and T-88, but not too much about this single turbo option. How does A'pexi's ball bearing turbo stand up to the T-78?

I have the Apex and i think it's a great turbo, but I dont think it has near the potential that the T78 or T88 has as far as hp numbers. It is a very COMPLETE kit though. I dont know if the GReddy turbo kits are as complete as the Apex kit.

The apexi turbo is more of a street turbo, you may want to check out the dyno graph in this thread https://www.rx7club.com/vforums/show...threadid=10464 The Greddy t-88 is very laggy, I would imagine it would be considered strickly track. The t-78 is probably the best setup for street/strip. Apexrx7, what ecu are you running, and have you dynoed yet?

I am running the Apexi turbo. I love it, I also have a stock twin turbo and I can't tell the difference in lag, they both come on at about the same time but the Apexi just keeps on pulling.

I am running a reprogrammed stock ECU with the Apex SAFC piggy back. So far so good, but I am only boosting 10 pounds. I am considering the Apex Power FC though. How does your car run with just the base Power FC maps? I heard the base map makes the car run very rich. Is it safe to just plug in the Power FC without spending time (and $$$) on the dyno for tuning purposes? Today RP told me it requires about 2 hours ($400) of dyno time. Any suggestions?

Oh yeah, at 10 pounds I push about 340 hp

Apexrx7, wait untill you push the boost from 10psi to 15psi. It is like night and day. The powerfc isn't a bad choice, it will need to be dialed in properly with the commander. I used the powerfc and then went haltech, which in my opinion is the better of the two. Either way you should get rid of the stock ecu to take advantage of better processing.

I'm running 10psi on my Apexi Turbo (ported motor), but I can't even imagine running 15psi. My rear end slides out in 2nd gear.. My maps in my car are programed for 14psi, any of you guys out there interested in comparing maps..

RX7KELVIN, I am running the Apex fmic from RX7 Fashion. So, if I run the Power FC, can I just plug it in, set it for let's say, 14 pounds of boost (a 4 pound increase) and run the car? Or do you think the 2 hour and $400 worth of dyno time is absolutely necessary. By the way, right now I have a upgraded fuel pump, but stock injectors.
Any advice or suggestions?
What are the possibilities of new computers (for street cars) hitting the market sometime soon?

My modes are:

Street Ported Motor (KD)
1300cc injectors
HP Nipodenso Fuel Pump
Apexi Turbo
Power FC and Commander (Programmed by Ray)

My idle is real rough, I've done everything everyone suggested but still no luck. When I leave the AC on or any other electrical load it seems to help.

Kevin,
I've got the same mods as you and my PFC was also tuned by ray. My idle is better than it was before the single, but my motor has not been ported so maybe that's where the problem lies. No 2 ported motors are alike, so I would think your next step would be a little dyno time. When Dave gets his Dyno up & running I'm gonna make an appointment for a little fine tuning myself but I love it, at 15lbs the other night I made a Z06 look silly.

Roadrace,

Thanks for the info. I know I need to get it on a dyno, but I live in Minneapolis, far from east and west coast were most of the dyno's are at. That's one reason I've only been running 10psi. Have you fine tunned anything on yours yet, I'm a little leary to do it myself? At idle I can see the injector duty go from 0 to 8% while fluctuating, and on a real hot day it seems to idle better. Any info. would be appreciated, Let me know how it goes at KD. Shoot me an email anytime.

rx7kelvin, i have the apex rx6 turbo kit, the Rotary Performance fuel pump upgrade, reprogrammed stock ECU, Apex SAFC, and the Apex fmic.
I know i need to hurry up and go to a stand alone computer and upgraded injectors. I just want to get stuck with something that has a lot of bugs in it. Do you think Apex will comeout with another PFC version?

HP numbers with this??

Okay this is going to sound crazy, but I really want a veilside FD in Viper Steel Grey. Not too bad yet, eh? Yeah well I want a signle on it that can let me put down 600 rwhp. Can the RX6 handle this? I mean youre running 10-15 psi
what are the 15 psi numbers? easily over 400 rwhp is what I'd like to see. Anyone have a 22psi dyno with it, and their mods. I completely plan on building the car to be able to handle that boost once in a while (to make Z06's look even sillier). But I'd prefer to run maybe 3 levels of boost, 10 (daily), 15(a race), 22 (a challenge, or a modded tt car). So if anyone cna direct me in the right direction, but I was thinking of buying a fellow members car with this turbo and wanted to know if it would meet my wants. THanks, and sorry its long.

Still dreamin of that FD with the 5 power to weight ratio.

Well the apexi turbo won't get you to 600rwhp. It should get you to 400rwhp easily, as long as tuning is the way it should be. I imagine the 450rwhp is about the max, that is also the number that apexi says the turbo is capable of. This turbo also begins to lose effiency somewhere around 20psi from what I have heard, so looking at some dynos where the turbo puts down about 415rwhp @ 15psi it makes sense to me that it would max out somewhere around 20psi putting down 450rwhp. Don't forget that the rx7 is light so you don't need 600rwhp to beat a z06, with 400rwhp you will leave him way behind.

Im not worried about a Z06 if I were to get a FD. I was hoping to be able to race something a lil faster (sport bikes, diablos, etc). I'd imagine that if I were to run a 10 or below 1/4 then I could beat most everything else on 4 wheels that I would see on a daily basis. I wouldnt run it with the boost for 600 rwhp all teh time (see above post), but anyone got some info on a single that could do it? T78, T88, or maybe something else?

The t-88 is one of the biggest turbos for the fd, however you still probably won't get to 600rwhp. Not to mention that the car wouldn't be reliable or any good for the street. You would have to do a huge port of some kind along with the turbo which would leave you with a very laggy setup. The t-78 would be the best for street/strip and with an aggresive street port done correctly would be fairly responsive and should be able to reach toward 500rwhp with enough boost on race gas. If you really want a 600rwhp reliable and streetable rx7 then 3 rotor is the best way to go imho. You might want to post this topic back on the main page to attract some attention of the more serious draggers.

What other big ones are there?
I think/know/heard that the HKS T51R is the biggest turbo.

Yes the hks t51r is another large one, not sure what is the biggest. I think that there is a KKK turbo kit that is huge, and then you have the t04x and the t04x2.
