Anyone here have a turbo 1st gen?

Im thinking about putting a turbo on my 12A, and I was wondering what you have used. I have read some stuff, and I was wondering if anyone can give me any advise on trying to make up a system. Id like to use a carb (cant afford FI), and Id like a smaller turbo for low end/mid range boost. Id really like to have an intercooler if possible as well...Im just planning, nothing major is gonna happen for a while, but it would be nice to know ahead of time. So is this worth it? Or should I just swap in a 13B from a Turbo II? Damn...I dont know what to do...

a 13BT will be more reliable and can get way more HP out of it than a 12A NA which is turboed.

RMD, do a T2 swap, you will be glad you did

I have a modified T2 in my car (1st gen) and I realy like it, the engines are stronger than 12A's and you have a wider power range.

If you need custom front mount IC, single turbo manifolds etc, I make these for 1st gen sevens if you want something that is circuit track proven and well made then I will be glad to help you, or if you just want some advise then drop me a line.

If you're on a budget, and a TII swap is not in order, I remember that Cartech made a kit (carb'ed). If you can track down one of those. That could be a start.

Here are some vid's
of a 1g w/ Cartech kit on the dyno.

Anyone catch them numbers...
IIRC, he put down 232@4500 (torque still rising) when he let off. There was a small fuel leak near the throttle linkage. When operating properly, I believe those kits were putting down about 280@6500, if memory serves. Maybe someone else can enlighten...

This guy that I used to work with had a turbo 1st gen. It's been a couple of years since I've seen him, but if I remember correctly, it was a motor from Japan, and I remember him telling me that Mazda came out with a 12a turbo for the last year 1st gen (don't quote me on that, it was two years ago). All that I remember from seeing it first hand was that it was carburated, turbo, and bolted directly into his 1st gen.
One of the last few times I heard from him, he told me that during a test run after the install, the engine popped and spewed white smoke everywere (water jacket?).

Yeah thats gregs car. It is freaking sweet! He took me for a ride in it. he smoked the wheels all the way through the middle of 3rd when it finally got traction I thought I was going to have whip lash.

I would love to see a full run on the dyno in that thing.

BTW he has a 13bt block in that car.

Working on my 12at... Almost there. Well almost got the parts anyhow... we'll see how it goes when I'm done.

But yeah I think I'm gonna stop by over at the rotaryshack shop this week... I gotta give'em a call let'em know that I'm gonna stop by.

But yeah if you seriously wanna turbo your 12a, I'm on the way myself so I'd be more than happy to share the knoweldge. Eventually I do a whole write up with pics and all. Just got the manifold and it looks sweet though! Perfect shape! Car hat should be here next week... gonna go search for a turbo at the yard this week, maybe one from a T-bird?

Well PM me if you need anything.
