Turbos, the untold story
For the most part these guys are secretive because the turbo itself costs a fraction of what they charge for it. Most have an outside builder like Precision, ITS(SP Engineering, Powerhouse) make private label turbos for them.
In their(XS/SR) defense, you are paying for their R&D which may have been lengthy. It's not that hard to take a turbo apart, measure it, and determine what you have. Of course you have to have the turbo to do this. If you are the new owner of an XS turbo at full retail, I doubt very many people are going to take it apart so someone else can avoid paying the price you yourself just paid.
If you want a turbo like one of these(at less than XS/SR retail) you need to figure out who the OEM is , and contact them with your needs. The result will often be the same, or a similar turbo at a lower price. Of course the names of the OEMs are closely held as well
Keep in mind these combinations are proprietary, and some key components, like a special wheel may be in short supply.
well as always this is IMHO, and not to be thrown around as irrefutable fact. Regards, Carl

T04S is actually a HKS proprietary turbo that they have exclusive rights to from Garrett, the compressor side is a 60-1 compressor with .70 compressor housing w/ 4" inlet, and 2.5" outlet. The turbine side is a P-trim wheel with divided tangential housing w/ a couple of A/R choices. It also has the 'Big' shaft.
I actually tracked down the part number for this turbo and tried to order it through a few Garrett dealers, none of them could get it because of the reasons above.

At least you're not dancing around like a monkey on speed shouting "give it up for me" and "I've got four words for you: I love this company!!!"

unless u have the turbo kit no one will tell you the specs. on it becasue they try to keep it secret. i personally have heared bad things about xs turbos, but everyone has a different opinion though. i think the best place to buy the kit is from www.rx7store.net they seem to have some of the best sales prices.

As with anything you spend time and research and build, you want to protect that work and expense. With anything good, there are bound to be copy-cats trying to one up the competition. I fully understand and respect their business interests for doing this. Hell, I also respect Microsoft for their registration of their XP operating system. With all things good, protecting their work so they can do better work in the future is the name of the game. Giving your money to a source that copies and take away money from the gifted and talented only defeats the end goal of a better solution.

I could agree with this if any of it where true..
the rotary community has been doing 60-1 hybrid TO4's for ever. I believe longer then that kit existed..
And for your rant on microsoft.. it is about the same thing.. they didn't write any of their software really besides 95/98/me. and 95/98/me sucks.. every good peice of software microsoft sells, someone else wrote. They just buy up small companies by destroying markets, rebrand and sell.
Not saying the products are bad. But microsoft has done exactly what you are talking about.

Be aware the T04R has a distinct off/on turbo lag. The boost comes on rather adruptly - not a good thing for road racing or autocross. Straight line will be quite nice.

Ghost Ride the Whip
While we're on the topic, how fast does the XS T04s kit spool up? When are you guys seeing full boost? IS it an on/off turbo kit for drag only, or does it have a smooth transition and would it be suitable for road race?

This turbo is one of the roadracers' favorites due to the good, smooth, linear boost build up. It flows a lot of air even at low boost levels. Full boost is usually around 3500 RPM, response is quite good w/ my 1.0 A/R exhaust housing. The top end is good too, my horse power curve is still climbing when the throttle is lefted at 7500 rpm on the dyno.

I just took a ride in a friend's T04S (XS) car which has a lot of tuning left to do. On a 60 degree day (S Florida), first would go up in smoke, 2nd would chirp and 3rd was no biggie. Granted, it needed more tuning. Boost did come on fairly soon and soft, unlike my T78/GT79 hybrid (same as Jason's) which comes on with quite a bang. The T04S is definitely more driver friendly. Jason, ever get any dyno numbers on that setup? I figure you'll get your crap together before I will due to Tony's tuning expertise. I still have to swap in a new engine thanks to sand ingestion (no filter) before I get any real numbers, sigh...Anyway, the T04 is a nice turbo that can be rebuilt just about anywhere. Good street setup.
