I've run a small in-line filter on my turbo for 3 years. No problems at all - I'll take the extra protection any day.

Do they need changing as often as the oil filters for the engine

Mine is just a screen that I take out every now and then and clean.

How big of a screen and do you actually see anything on it when you take it apart??

I have a small 10 micron filter that may be perfect for this job.

Could someone explain this further? Where does the filter go?

Similar to a fuel filter.. but in line to the turbo. In some cases even the smallest fragments can kill a turbo. Just extra protection.

I'm not sure of the exact size - but for all intents and purposes - it's basically a fuel filter.

Here's a pic of it - you can see most of it attached to the oil feed.

For those interested Mcmaster Carr sells a awsome little filter that would be great for this job. They sell it with different micron (think 10-40 micron) ratings and if I remember right it's under 15 bucks. About 3" long and comes with either SAE o-ring boss ports or 1/4" NPT.

Jim- is it more like a bronze element vs a flat screen? That's some tight IC tubing routing! Has the SS line rubbing up against it rubbed a hole in the tube yet? SS lines are like files, they like to eat alumn parts for lunch

I'll have to take a look at it tonight - I honestly can't remember.

I have a rubber hose that slides over the SS line to keep it from chewing up the IC piping. But in that pic it's slid back out of sight.

I like that idea, anything to make a turbo safer and last longer. I think I may do that next oil change. I just want mine to last as long as it can.
