400rwhp vs traction vs tires size

Hi all,

I have a 13B-RE powered FC with a TO4R. I read on the board that people with big turbo setup have no traction in 1-2-3 gears with 275-285 tires. In my case the car is only spinning when I shift from 1st to 2nd gear. I'm playing with the clutch. I have 255 kumho MX tires on the rear and Tein flex coilover. So I think that maybe I don't have the power I should have or the tire/suspension setup are very good. There is no dyno near where I am.

I would like to know how is your traction, what kind of power you are putting to the ground and what is your suspension/tire (tire size and make) setup.

Thanks!

Alex

that's because everyone runs 18's with 35 series tires.

grab some 15x10's and throw down some mickey thompson's. you'll break driveline parts with haste

bottom line is low-pro tires are for turning, hi-pro let the sidewalls bend ad your contact patch gets bigger when you're driving in a straight line.

the good news is 15" rims are cheap. slap on a set of drag tires and run those when you go to the track.

you could try some 275/40's and see what happens, but for the price of a sticky set of tires, you could almost buy the rims andt tires for the 15's

Actually I have pretty good traction. I think I should have less traction with my engine/turbo setup if I compare with other people's comments with similar setup. Do you think one inch difference in tire diameter could make me stick a lot more than guys with 18" 35 series ? My rear tires are 255/40/17.

Whats the best tyre choice for good traction (bigger side wall) and good handling (smaller tyre wall) ???

^ more or less, but there's so much variation in the brand and type of tire that you can only use that as a general rule.

I have 450hp in an fd, running kuhmo mx 255/40/17. I have almost no traction problems in any gear.

Depends on how you drive. If you granny shift every gear you shouldn't break lose but if you power shift 1st-2nd or 2nd-3rd you will break lose. I did plenty on my old FD running 275s in the rear.

High HP rotaries typically dont have the traction issues of other cars because they do not make that much TQ. And wider tires do not help straight line traction that much. A wide contact patch is good for turning while a long contact patch is what gives you straight line traction, IE a taller tire

well its cooler around here in ct now around 65-70 during the day. in second gear when the 2nd turbo comes online i spin the tires. also first to second shift is pretty harry as well. i am only making 360 rwhp. i have koni shocks with eibach springs, and newish 245 toyo proxes t1-s. kind of sucks actually.

which brings us to the other half of the equation: suspension setup

I have stock r2 suspension with the exception of hks lowering springs, m2 toe links, and trailing arms. Other then on smooth worn blacktop, I don't have any traction problems.

kumho mx are pretty decent tires.
i've got 245-45-17 kumho 712's. they're better than i thought they'd be, but i'll still light up first and second...and third if i shift too hard.

rsr race springs, koni rear, tokico front, toe links and trailing arms

Good to know. Now I need to find a dyno to know what kind of power I have. I hope 400rwhp@15psi.

I had 245/45/17 712's before. The mx's hook much better, but the handling seemed much sharper with the 712's. The mx's must have a much softer side wall, going into corners was unsettling to me at first. Now that I'm used to them it's fine, they also seem to be more predictable at the limit then the 712's ever were.

Tried 28-40, the sidewalls in the mx are just softer. Feels like the car has more wiggle then on the 712's. It may be that they are mounted on 8.5" wide rims currently. I just bought a set of 9.5", hopefully that will help the situtation.

I have Fuzion ZRi 245/45/16 on the stock wheels, and I have the stock suspension. On pump gas (450 whp @ 17psi) I spin all of first, most of second, and chrip them in third. When I had race gas in it (503whp @ 22psi) I didn't have traction until top of 3rd gear........... I need wider wheels.

i think i'm just gonna grab some mickey thompson 255/50's and stick them on the spare rims for when i want straight line traction.

ryan1, i've heard almost nothing but good things about the mx tires, so i was thinking about getting a set when i get the new wheels. so other than the sharpness and initial response, how was the overall handling compared to the 712's? should i not waste the money on them?

PDViper77, I work at a shop that sells fusion tires. They are junk, don't waste your $$ on them again for your new rims.

GUITARJUNKIE28, I do like them and think are worth the $$. I think overall they handle better than the 712s. I eqaute the difference between the 712 and the mx, to the first few runs you ever made on slicks. Once your used to the difference it's fine. I think that once I put the mx's on my 9.5" rims instead of 8.5" it will help to sharpen them up.

Was it a out of control spinning tires, or just a quick chirp?
