13brew to fb question
Long story short. I am just now getting back into my rx7 after about 4 years. Had a shop do the 13brew swap for me. Engine kept failing at around 1k miles. After 2 rebuilds I gave up and put the car in storage. Now I'm back. Since I paid a shop to handle the conversion I thought they would cover all the technical issues involved in the the swap. After doing some research and tearing down the engine and removing it myself I have found that the oil metering pump was never hooked to any linkage to the throttle. This setup uses a se front cover on the 13brew to allow for easy mounting. Since the 13brew original front cover did not rely on linkage to the oil metering pump, what are you guys doing that are using the se front cover. Only thing I can think of is premixed or custom linkage. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance!

I've never heard of anyone getting a custom linkage to work reliably on any throttlebody. I think Aaron Cake attempted one for his 6 port turbo project but he couldn't get it right. You are either going to have to install an FD OMP (and control it with a Haltech etc) or premix. If you wanted an OMP your best bet would have been to swap in a series 4 T2 engine instead and use the mechanical pump.
Why were these engines failing though? What were the symptoms and how did it happen?

I was running the fb oil metering pump. Problem is that it was never connected to the throttle linkage. It seems to be spring loaded to the closed position unless a linkage opens it up. I wouldn't think that a non functional oil metering pump would cause an engine failure in a thousand miles. I really don't know why the engine keeps failing. I do know that I am switching shops this time around. I was using Scott at mazsport in largo. I'm going to Pettit Racing. Hopefully they can build a strong motor and figure out why the failures keep happening. Maybe Scott didn't tune it correctly. Maybe he didn't build it correctly. Maybe because there is no thermal barrier on the turbo and the turbo is so close to the intake there was a problem. Heck, maybe I just don't know how to drive it and ran it to hard. These failures caused me to I get out of the rx7 for many years after spending a ton of money and ending up with nothing. I hope this time around things go better.

of course it would. ive seen engines let go within 20 miles of the linkage failing. metering oil to the apex seals is a must, and if the omp isnt doing it, something has to.

Ok, thanks for the input. I need to find away to connect the oil metering pump to the linkage. Or premixed I guess. Waiting for other suggestions from people who are using an se feint cover on a 13brew.

Here's one. An FD TB to S4 OMP using a "Lokar" type universal throttle cable with fabed brackets at each end. I'm guessing should be very similar to adapting a gsl-se OMP/ front cover.

Yes, I agree. I got screwed. I found out today just how bad I got screwed. Pettit racing took the engine apart and looked at it for me. They informed me that the engine had never been machined and cleaned during the rebuild and that mazsport had installed used seals and just about every part in it was worn. I paid mazsport to rebuild this engine and even supplied them the seal kit. They basically through together a bunch of used junk they they had lieng around and installed used seals. No doubt I got screwed. Wonder how many others have dealt with this. I'm pissed!
