stand-alone confusion..

so i plan on doing a j-spec swap with a greddy FMIC, TID mod, necessary gauges, full turbo RB exhaust, 550cc primaries, 720cc secondaries, walbro fuel pump/rewire, ported wastgate, and what-not, etc. etc...

i wanna do a standalone. but i have no idea what it's about... microtech or haltech, it doesn't really matter which one i get.. i guess. it's all up to the guy that tunes my car on a dyno, correct?

i've also heard it's hella expensive to have someone tune it... like $500+. is this true?

not to mention i have no friggin clue of how to hook it up.. do i have to hack up the wiring harness? and what else would i need with a stand-alone?

i've searched and all i've found was threads with people who know what they're talking about... you know, the regular rx nerds. and no newbies.. like me. i didn't know what section to put it in so i'm coming over here. is there a link that has info about this? thanks for any help.

-The choice of which EMS is up to you. Decide what is right by your budget and what you're looking to do with the car.

-They are supplied with a harness. However, you can cut out the old plugs from the harness to goto the respective sensors. Or get new plugs!

-What's needed. Soldering skill, common sense, and the ability to discern one color from another...that and some patience.

Different shops charge different rates. I didn't really post a number for that reason. One shop may charge you a flat out fee, another may do it per hour.

The most I'd spend on any single tuning session would be something like 100-150/hr for 2-3/hrs.

Depends on who does the tuning. You can certainly rough tune it yourself with a passenger, EGT gauge and a big hill, but that's far from ideal.

If you want it professionally done, figure a few hours on the dyno.

It's not done yet...I have spent so much time on other people's cars this past year that I have neglected my own...Only last night did I finish porting my exhausts.

Estimated completion date for Tina phase II is sometime early summer. I expect to be making some decent power, still on the 6 port block and high compression rotors.

If you're in Houston, TX you've got RP in your backyard - well, sorta kinda.

Hell, even bdc196 lurks around in your state somewhere.

I can't Imagine they are complete based on the ones you took. Do you still have a pic of my car taken 3:00 am In the raining Monday morning? I've been meaning to ask you about that.

If theres anyone you can trust in your area, its Rotary Performance. Just go to Rx7.com dig up a phone number and give them a call. Id look for someone with expierence with rotaries to tune your car.

I'm doing the exact same thing in my 88 gxl. I'm buying the Microtec LT8. If i put a s5 motor in my s4 and block off the omp i should be fine right? There's two people running the microtechs that i'm acquaintences with but have offered to help install it and set it up. Does it use the afm? what sensors does it use? sorry for all the newbieish questions but untill today i was gettin ready to install a s4 motor in my car but found a s5. A friend offered to buy me a standalone and by god i'm going to get it. I had all the s4 stock electronics ready to go in. Thanks for any help!

This Is exactly what I did to my 88 GXL except I converted to a s5 Turbo. I also Installed full K2RD block-off plates. So, If you ditch the Metering Oil Pump (not OMP ) you will be alright, providing you pre-mix In the correct fuel/pre-mix ratio.

As for the use of stock sensors or GM sensors - you must specify this at the time of purchase, you will be using the:

- Fuel Injectors

- Coolant Temperture Sensor

-Air Intake Temperture sensor (found at the TB not AFM)

-TPS

-O2 Sensor (If you wish to display readings on either the Hand Controller, Lap Top or Dash Display). The system does not operate In close-loop. Therefore, the O2 sensor Is technically not used, aswell as the AFM (as you were asking).

-Crank Angle Sensor (CAS)

-and obviously your Coil Pack/Ignitors.

The LTX-8 models have Bosch Coil Packs supplied and capable of running them where as the LT-8's do not have this feature.
