dude you could use -10 an with the stock HT-18 from fc's i had a hard time it would have been easier if i reclocked the center section a little. Otherwise i didnt want to go to the store and play guesiing games with -an fittings as they are expensive. i finally worked something out and it works great.

So I can use either or? Im sorry I so newb but I dont know about fittings really.

I just dont know if there is a benefit to use one verse another.

And how do I know what size tap I need i need for what fitting

Slightly too big should not hurt anything, it's just a gravity drain. I would be more concerned with the feed line and the use of a restrictor on the oil inlet of the turbo.

It mainly lowers the pressure of the oil going to the turbo as I understand it. Prevents the seals from failing, allowing oil to pass directly into the exhaust resulting in blue smoke under accell and burning oil.

Restrictors are also used on ball bearing turbos,since they require far less oil to do the job.

Sorry about the blurry pic,MattG.....that is a pic of an old photo.
I used a short section of steel pipe that is threaded into the front cover.Its basically just gas/water pipe,so its cheap and the taper-thread tap is also common and cheap.The actual drain is the stock TII unit with the lower flange cut off,then I used a section of correct grade rubber hose to bridge the gap between my front cover and the shortened TII pipe.
That is my old setup,when I was running an S4.My current S5 wont allow that area for drainage since the electic OMP is in the way.I simply extended the system I had,to reach to the front corner of the cover,and then redrilled and tapped another hole up there.

Ok cool,

Now there isnt any pressure on that line its just a gravity feed line, so as long as I used hose that would hold up to the heat of the turbo and resist the oil I should be fine.

What type of hose did you use? Do you remember?

The same stuff I use for oil cooler lines,just bigger.

Its a bulk Dayco line I get from the hydraulic/bearing shop by the foot.I work on tractors and equipment,so line/hose is something I deal with every day.Its nothing special or exotic,just a rubber/nylon reinforced hose called "B" grade.Its petroleum rated and good to 500psi and 300 degrees continuous operation......well within the tolerances of any part of our lubrication systems.

Cool, I have to go to NAPA tomorrow anyways to buy a fuel filter for the SE and a couple other parts, They make hydraulic hose there, so Ill just buy a foot of it.

Make that saves a few pennys.

With my initial setup I did the same thing as steve, drilled a tapped a pipe fitting from Lowes into the front cover, cut the end off the stock oil drain and connected teh two using some hose I got from a friend who is a mechinc for excavators etc, its hydraulic hose so it stands up to oil.
Now that i've gone to FC style engine mounts I went back to the FC front cover and stock oil drain...

you can drill it on the car if you really have too
use some wheel grease on the bit and that will pull the shavings away from getting inside

then whatever you dont catch you can flush the drilled hole and the pan and then you are set

If your turbo supply lines are too big, your engine will starve due to the oil being diverted to the turbo. I was building a car for GRM $2006 challenge and cooked the engine in my driveway while trying to get the car to idle

I called summit racing today trying to get a tap kit so I can drill/tap my front cover using an -8an fitting. And they said that it is a size 3/4 16 sae and they dont have any taps or fitting in that size, and that my best bet would be to call a nuts&bolts specialist.

Is there a specific place you got the tap kit and the -8an fittings?

EDIT: I called Jeggs and they gave me part number 555-80505 but that's a thread chasing tap set? Is that what I need?

Finding the tap wasnt hard, I picked it up at the local Napa, but finding the drill bit for the tap can be tough!

Had to order it off amazon

I went back to ace and they said I either need a 5/8ths or 11/64 drill bit.

I dont know why I said 5/8ths or 11/64ths... I meant 11/16.
