Had my car for 5 days, locked the damn keys in the hood compartment (left them on the battery while checking fluid levels ) and my damn doors were locked because I locked out of habit.

Pulled the seal back, used a spark plug gauge (the kind with the flip out gauges that look like popsicle sticks) to lightly pull back the glass and slip a coat hanger in there, and popped the lock....all of which took literally less than a minute. Didn't chip the glass, or even scratch the window tint!

So, if I can do this, this fast, and without ZERO signs of entry...I bet the whole damn world can get in my car if they wanted to.

Atleast the horn started honking, and the headlights were flipping up and and down like mad.

 

Well, thanks for informing all the auto thieves on how to steal our cars. You're killing me here. Just giving you a hard time.

 

Just so you know it wouldn't mater what alarm you had or anything else. If they want your car it's not going to be there when you get back, anything you add is just more of a headache for the theif. In the time it took you to get it open a roll back can have it hooked up and on it's way in half that time.

I'll bet there isn't an auto thief in the world who does not know this already.

This isn't even in a Car Theft 101 course it's so obvious. Sets of tools to do this can be found in any decent tool catalogue.

 

The only thing I could see being any help would be buying something that monitors your car by gps, that way its easily located, now if they part your car out before you find it well than your screwed. Everything else is just going to slow the theif down, I personally installed a kill switch in a very remote location in my car and some other security features along with a viper 791vx alarm.

 

Exactly what everyone has been saying...if they want it they will get it. Alarms are easily bypassed and I just read a good article on how cars are being stolen that have the "anti-theft" transponder technology which has been proven to be easily bypassed by simply pulling a fuse. Best way is a garage/gps device.

 

Similar to purerx7, I installed a kill switch in a very remote location on my last 7. Basically a kill switch to the fuel pump.
I would think that that would stop or severly slow a thief down when attempting to steal your car. What car thief has the time to search around your car for a hidden switch. They want to be in and gone immediately.

You give a professional thief 2 - 3 min w/ your car, and IT WON'T BE THERE. Alarm or no alarm. Get in, pop the hood, rip the wires off the battery. Alarm is done. Backup battery? They'll go for that as well. Sirens can be diabled quickly too, even by shorting out the electrical system if necessary. Then, tow the car away, part it out at your convenience in the privacy of your garage... You guys have a real false sense of security unfortunately.

Sory man, but GPS is EXTREMELY overrated. If you're parked under a tree for example, and thus have an obstructed "view" to the satellite, or are parked in a cement structure (underground parking for example) where (again) the signal would be obstructed, GPS is USELESS. The only thing (that I know of) that will transit through virtually anything will be radio waves, which is why Lo-Jack uses that vs. GPS.

 

I just thought it was a little ridiculous as to how easy it was. I realize if someone wants it, they are going to get it....that is if they can get into my garage and get out before my home alarm goes off and I shove a .45 down their throat.

Full coverage is a no brainer with a machine like this imo.

 

Install a Steering wheel with Quick Relise and remove it everytime you park the car.............

Yeah if its a professional theif with a towing vehical theres not much that can save you, aside from somebody noticing the alarm going off and maybe getting suspicious, but most people dont even turn to car alarms anymore. However a good alarm system will chase off alot of people off, since it would be easiar to just jack the honda next to you. But yes, if somebody really wants your car your screwed.

GPS isnt THAT sensitive, its still plenty usable under a tree. I have a handheld GPS that even works in above ground parking garages, its the completely surrounded areas like tunnels and underground parking lots that give trouble.

The best anti theft device I know of getting the windows etched. Professional theives see this right away, glass is insanely expensive to replace and its not like somebody isnt going to notice a car comming in needing all new glass for no reason.

What is window etching? I would be pissed if my car was stolen but, I do have insurance. The biggest thing I would worry about is if someone stole it for a joy ride and beat the crap out of it and the insurance people giving it back saying its ok, then you know the rest of the story.

 

car theft is the same around the globe guys - all you can do is minimise any potential risks by avoiding parking your 7's in any unsafe areas (day or night) - however, if you must park your 7 in these bad areas then think about tinting your windows, installing an alarm with an imobiliser, cheaper option would be to install a 'kill switch' hidden anywhere within the vehicle.

I agree re sat tracking - overrated and expensive with serious misconceptions re coverage...

I think when it comes to car theft - bottom line.... avoidance will always supersede prevention.

window etching (as I understand it) is similar to what is done with diamond etching - i.e. a laser is used to etch a distinctive code either at the top or bottom of your drivers side or passenger side window - pretty useless system for cars unless this technology is used to identify ones vehicle in the event of burnt-out thefts...
