Haven't posted in awhile because I haven't really done any work on the car since I moved into a house. Yes, the house is keeping me busy, as is another automotive-related project.

I did take her out to auto-x last weekend. She did OK, but the Miata gearing isn't working for me. I'm never getting above 6K before I have to brake or hit a turn...which means I'm not making the power I should be. :/ So I'm start looking for a lower gear set for the diff.

Still have a few odds and ends to do. I found an angled shifter from a turbo 12A Savanna in Japan when I went there last month, so I'll be putting that in. It will put the shifter further back, thus will make it easier to shift in events. I also have a cigarette lighter I pulled from a Honda Civic in the local yard that I'll be putting into the dash so I have a way to charge my phone for the next time I take the car any distance.

Will keep you posted. Here's a pic from last weekend's event:

So,
Because I just want to work on this car just...because, I decided to lose an apex seal this weekend. So, I'll posting updates to this thread again. The whole thing happened because of a rookie mistake. I didn't locktite the bolts holding the velocity stacks on the carb. Had my friend Tommy take the car on the track with the Mazda factory race cars at Sevenstock this weekend while I rode shotgun. Bumpy track. A bolt worked its way loose and got gobbled up by the intake. One apex seal has left the building.

BUT, we had a great time on and off the track. The car pulled really well, and it handled remarkably well. Tommy had it going 120mph in the straights, which is faster than I've ever had the car and he was just getting warmed up.

The engine will be pulled in a couple of weeks and we'll get it rebuilt and put back in. Here's a little screen cap from a vid a friend of mine shot.

The compression test showed great compression on one rotor face, so my hopes are high that the housing is fine (otherwise I'd have all zeros). I'm crossing my fingers for a cheap rebuild.

I'm not so bummed about it. I got on the track with the factory 4-rotors, making for great photo ops, JNC photographed the car, and the Director of R&D at Mazda came over and personally thanked me for bringing the car...said it was his favorite.

I love this car, was great meeting you out there on Saturday, and I want to echo the sentiments of everyone else regarding the upcoming non-planned engine rebuild. Such a fluke thing, it sucks. But... I also can't wait to see the top secret project you've got coming up.

we have a list of small improvements that should add up to make the car reliable, and quite fast.

part of the process.

FM was there when we came in second with the current race car, because it broke a wheel stud, and then the other three went plastic, and the wheel loosened up. that was the nationals too

It was good to meet you.
I know it's pre mature but sounds like you may get lucky. LOCK NUTS! Next time. But I have no room to talk. I lost my tension rod nut and bushing on the first session.
Not as costly but it wasn't easy getting parts (that never fall off) that day. Mazda Factory team and Mazdatrix came to the rescue and I was back on track.

I've got to say, Your car looks even better in person. Keep up the good work!

j9fd3s' race was such a bummer...they had the leader and I'm almost sure they would have placed first. So yeah, that kind of stuff happens. The Japanese have a saying:

"Even monkey's fall out of trees".

Oh, and Ben Hsu from Japanese Nostalgic Car presented me with this shonin decal:

Ben told me that they're not for sale...they choose who to give them to.
